Anyone else feel that the filmed version of this is an underrated classic and easily tied with Requiem as the best film ever made about drug use (Although both are different in their approaches. One tries to show the brutal after-effects of drugs and the other is about the culture that developed as a result of substance taking). With Johnny Depp's best performance and some of the most amazing cinematography I've ever seen in my life, Terry Gilliam's adaptation is an utter classic. Anyone else love it as much as I did?

It's a good movie, dunno bout Jhonny Depp's best performance, but he did a great job.
Seriously, tell me a movie he did a bad job in? I can't think of any... sure you can question whether or not the movie itself was bad, BUT, he always does a good job at his character and Fear and Loathing is another example of it.
I am always going to stand by the fact that I feel Joihnny Depp is one of the, actually IMO, the best actor of all time... sure, I could be crazy for thinking it, but you can't deny that he isn't AT LEAST in a list of top 10 actors. Look at his range of movies and how well he portrays each drastically different character, he is amazing.
Anyway, enough with my Johnny Depp obsession...
Fear and Loathing is a great movie, and most people think so, I don't really think it's underrated though... everyone has something good to say about it for the most part. However, if for some reason I heard bad things about this movie, then I'd consider it underrated.
I guess you could say it's a good classic movie that isn't well known enough maybe, but it's not underrated using what I consider the definition of "underrated" is.
Eh, enough with this reply... it's long enough already. Sorry for the rant.
And now for my ending statement....
Go Johnny Depp, Go!

I dunno, some people thought he overdid Willy Wonka and didn't play him as he was in the book. I didn't care, however, and thought he was just perfect. He didn't try too hard to be weird like others would do. The weirdness came from within.

Posted: 8/30/05 at 11:10amI thought he was fantastic in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well. I think that some people personally just do not care for that type of performance (they think it's too weird) or maybe they just don't understand it. But really, I don't think he can do any wrong, even if he's in a movie that isn't incredibly good, he turns it into something that is enjoyable to watch. And about Fear and Loathing, I have a book that gives film ratings and short reviews of them and rates them from bomb-4 stars...this book gave it a "bomb" rating and said that the film doesn't have a plot. So, I think that would be why some people, especially critics, may think that the film is bad, but I personally like it and think Depp's performance is enough reason to watch it.

yea, i agree, i loved charlie and the chocolate factory.
And damn, everyone I've talked to likes Fear and Loathing... damn critics. I thought it was a great movie, eh whatever. So in that case, it IS underrated.

I don't know if I think that FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS is any kind of a masterpiece, but I do think that it is very underrated, mostly by movie critics whose senses have been dulled by watching the ordinary dreck that passes for movies these days.
I saw FEAR AND LOATHING at the Chelsea Multiplex thing on 23rd street. The projection wasn't good and the sound was muffled, but I staggered out of the theatre onto the street with the cinematic equivalent of a contact high -- I kept seeing Gilliamesque visions all day long. Repeat viewings have only increased my respect and affection for the movie. I'm sorry that it can now only be seen on TV/DVD, but at least we've got that great Criterion Collection DVD.

Posted: 8/30/05 at 5:26pmFear and Loathing is one of my favorite films. I've never read the book but I want to. Personally though, I think that 'Trainspotting' is the best Drug Addict type film, but that's just me.
