any of the college folk here take a film class? i have to write a short paper (just a shot by shot analysis of a partial scene) due in a week. we have to pick the movie ourselves...and since this is the first time i've taken a film class, i have no idea what's a good movie to pick! (ie, which movies actually use symbolism, obstruction shots, mirror shots, etc, to actually mean something, not just an empty film!) i was thinking of luhrmann's (sp??) r + j...any help? thanks!

For a classic (if not overdone) movie, Citizen Kane is chock full of really rich symbols. A lot of the older films, Hitchcok, especially are good for different types of shots.
Examples of Hitchcok films: North By Northwest, Psycho, Notorious, Rear Window...the list goes on and on.
Good luck ! Feel free to PM me if you need any more movie suggestions. I've taken a couple of film classes. :)
And if Citizen Kane and Hitchcock don't interest you, then you should also consider Imitation of Life and Far From Heaven.
thank you both for the suggestions! and evelyn - it's funny you mention those films because this class is actually studying Sirk throughout the whole semester...so eventually we'll be looking at those! (well, Far from Heaven is a Sirk remake..but i'm actually in the All That Heaven Allows presentation group!)

an AWESOME movie for this paper would be "in the mood for love". it's in chinese and has subtitles, but the obstructed views/mirrors are a HUGE part of the movie :)

Pyscho! And if you needed any help I could help you. I haven't taken a college film class but I took a very good one in high school and we watched Pyscho, analyzed it, and had an essay test on it.
How Green Was My Valley
Citizen Kane
Hitchcock and John Ford
