By "defined a decade" I meant films that were made in that decade that set the tone for what was going on in that time period.
For me, St. Elmo's Fire illustrated the yuppie angst, the work vs play question, how people related to each other, etc.
Breakfast at Tiffany's helped to shape the sophistication of the 60s, while still portraying a certain breaking out of 1950s conventions, but not reaching the radicalness of the late 60s.

That's what I thought you meant. I stand by LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR for the 70's. Always thought it captured that decade perfectly.
