So, I am finally moving to NYC this September! I just wondered if anyone living there had any good hints for making the move/transition a little easier. And I have a couple random but pretty important questions. Like: What cell phone company gets the best service? Any hints on where to look to live other than Astoria and Brooklyn? Anyone know of cheaper places still in Manhattan? I am moving with my best friend and we will be coming out to find a place for September in the first or second week of August. Is getting a broker really worth it or should we be good with just using Craig's List and that kind of thing? Any info you think would be helpfull, I would appreciate! Just trying to gather info from as many sources as possible! Thanks so much!
No advice at the moment but let me tell you that the city is more fab than ever! Congrats!
Sometimes people get lucky in finding good deals in Manhattan, but at the same time, there's nothing wrong with Astoria, Brooklyn, Jersey, or even the Bronx. These areas usually take about 15 minutes to commute into the city, and it's really not that bad. I'd say stay away from Staten Island as it is a very long ferry ride.
As for cells, I prefer Verizon, but every service has good and bad qualities about them. You just got to choose the one with the benefits that you need.
Craig's List is not bad. Broker's usually charge fees.
Here are a few places to look:
Washington Heights (Manhattan)
Park Slope (Brooklyn)
Astoria (Queens)
Pelham Bay Park (Bronx)
Castle Hill (Bronx)
Thank you, Justice! Although, a friend of mine told me some bad things about Washington Heights. Anyone else have any good info?
When you say "commute to the city," don't you mean, commute to Manhattan?
To people from the New York area, "the city" is Manhattan.
Help a girl out! I know you all are deep wells of knowledge!
I have nothing to add (I'm looking to move there myself!) but just sending my good luck to ya! It's exciting, isn't it? Just wait a few more hours until the New Yorkers are awake in the morning; you'll probably get more responses. In the mean time, a bit more help re: apartments: https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?boardname=off&thread=852014#1084904.
I'm moving to NYC in Sept also- from California... I love the city- anyway- I need to start looking for a place- anyone recommend a good way to go about doing that? Robert
I have friends who live in Washington Heights and they love it... it's a heckuva subway ride to mid-town though, but it's a beautiful area... years ago, the Village Voice was the best place to get info on apartments, but I'm sure there's lots of information out there, and these wonderful people on here will have much more relevant info than I...
First piece of advice I got when I moved to Manhattan for Grad School still applies, though: always look at your feet while riding on the subway...
