Hey guys. I've been asking several (hundred) people weather they think Stage Management would fall under Applied Theatre Arts, Fine Arts, or Theatre Design. I would think it was Theatre Design & Tech... but what do you think? This is my chosen career path (yeah, I'm just that awesome) and feel rather stupid for not klnowing *blush*. Any thoughts/ideas? Much thanks. =]

P.S- I have missed you all!

A most ingenious paradox.

a) Is this for a college search? It shouldn't matter, then.

b) I'm an actor and do not know per se. All fields would be under "Fine Arts" in the theatre. Theatre Design would be light, sound, costume, wig, makeup, and set design. Technical Theatre would be technical direction, shop foremen, set construction, etc. MANAGEMENT would be Theatre Management, Stage Managagement, and House Management.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

If it IS for college and you want to figure out what department it would fall in, doesn't that depend on the school? Either way, I don't think stage management would exactly be design, per se.

This is kind of for college but more so for my own interest. And I suppose it wouldn't be design; I agree with you two on that. I started thinking about this as UArts has stage management classes under both/because I'm a very curious person. Thanks for the imput. =]

Don't worry about what it is called.

It is:

Theatre > Management > Stage Management

And even if a college you are interested in doesn't list "Stage Management" as a focus, call and speak to a faculty member about this. Some schools DO offer the concentration but do not publish it.
