Flash Drive question

I have a virus on my other computer so what I want to do is save a lot of stuff on a Flash Drive (that's what I was told to buy) then reset my computer. So I understand it can save my music/pictures but, can it save full programs? Such as:
I have a dvd burner but I have no idea where the installation cd is. Can I save the program with the flash drive, then once my computer is reset, plug it in and have the program?

I wondered about this too. There are some flash drives that will hold up to a full gig of data. I'd love to be able to save programs too.
