I flew in and out of Iceland early Thursday and there was no interruption due to the volcano at all. There really hasn't been period. The trouble is with the ash which is carried by the wind, so the destination airports are the problem. I was lucky to fly into Stockholm on Thursday. The airports closed on Friday due to ash.
I chose Icelandair because they were really the ONLY airline that offered a one way ticket cheaper than a round trip one. (That is a practice that I do not understand. I can fly round trip to Nashville from NYC for $220, but one way is $500.) Don't expect any frills with your ticket. You get a beverage for free, but either grab some food in the airport or be prepared to spend £9 on a sandwich. Both legs of my flight were completely full because all the airports were open and people were making up for being grounded on other dates. I don't know if the seats could be more uncomfortable if they had no padding at all. The guy next to me kept putting his feet up on the seat and basically crouched there to keep from aching. Three hours into the flight, there were at least 25 people walking the aisles and the rest of us were shifting uncomfortably. I couldn't sleep because of the guy beside me getting up and down all night. In the Iceland airport, which is gorgeous, as they called for my flight a woman beside me said to her friend, "We might as well wait for last call. These seats are more comfortable than the ones on the plane." (We were on metal seats at the time.) The TVs in the back of the seat in front of you play 8 or so movies. Avatar and Sherlock Holmes were the only new ones besides an Icelandic film. I had seen both, so I was stuck watching Avatar for the 6th time on the first leg. On the second leg, 3.5 hours, my TV didn't work. There were no available seats to move to, so I just read. It didn't matter anyway, because they were showing the same selections. When I have flown to Stockholm before on American and Continental, the service has been fantastic. Throughout the flight, attendants walk the aisles with water and just to check on things. With Icelandair, you have to actively seek an attendant. They do have snazzy little uniforms, though. I mean, you get what you pay for. I spent 24 hours getting from Tennessee to Stockholm, and was exhausted, so it may have just felt worse. I may choose Icelandair again because of price, but I will think long and hard before I do so.
