I need some advice.
I will be moving out soon after living at home for a year (YAY!) and I have gotten used to practicing my singing in my mom's basement, because its somewhat quiet from the rest of the house. Do you guys think it would be possible to still practice my music in my new apartment without driving all the tenants nuts? Anyone got any good tips? Thanks.

The second someone complains the management, they will probably ask you to stop.
Some places forbid it, as well as practicing instruments.
It's all up to your neighbors.

Yes, that will be in your lease (as well as quiet hours). Still, in my apartment complex, nobody minds if you practice, so long as it's not for too long, not too loud, and not too late at night. I quietly play my guitar early in the evening and have never had any complaints. Just don't let it get louder than the level that a TV or CD play would be at, and you should be fine.

For what it's worth, I've found that the sound carries down into the apartment below but not so much laterally. EXCEPT for laterally out the front door and into the hall. I can't hear a thing between my neighbors on the same floor, and very little from my neighbor below. But I can tell when the folks upstairs are wearing rubber souls on their shoes! My next door neighbor is a pianist and gives lessons. I can never hear a thing from there until I open my front door. The sound carries so well out the front doors that you can even hear conversations out in the hall.
EDIT TO ADD: I should have said that this is true where I live. I'm quite sure that different buildings are constructed differently and this may not be true elsewhere.

I've wondered that often, too. Especially since I'm in a new place and I'm about to start taking vocal lessons again. In my last apartment I sang all the time, loudly, and my neighbors said they could never hear anything. I'm not sure about sound in my new place, but there is language in the lease that forbids instrument practice.
It's a good question Gertie. :)
