I'm watching "The Mummy" with Brendan Fraser right now on an HD channel, and it's a terrific movie!
But did it need to become a (rotten) franchise???
I'm really sick of the "business" side of Hollywood creeping way too far into the "art." (okay, this may not be ART, but it was a very good movie...)
If something hits, they HAVE to turn it into a multi-movie franchise. And they're NEVER any good. NEVER. They need to make 17 sequels, and sell lunch boxes, iron-on patches and DVD box sets.
I HATE it. It's so pathetically desperate.
Hollywood has 3 fresh ideas, and parlays it into 37 movies. I'm SO over it!!
(end of rant)

And the worst part is the grossly inferior sequel usually does BETTER at the box office than the original film.
...which is why Hollywood keeps making them.
We'll all buy tickets to see the sequel, based solely on the reputation of the first movie... because we THINK we know what we're going to see... and PART TWO always sucks.
ALWAYS.
When will we ever learn?

In general, I agree with you completely.
But the sequels don't always suck. Sometimes they are better.
The Bourne Supremacy.
The Bourne Ultimatum.
Shrek 2.
Toy Story 2.
And then, going old-school: Return of the Jedi, Back to the Future 2, The Godfather: Part II, Aliens, etc.
But, of course, a good sequel is an exception, supporting your point.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

I understand when movies were intended to be trilogies or "chapters" in a legacy...
BUT... I hate how Hollywood tries to turn everything into a trilogy. EVERYTHING.
Just you wait... Mamma Mia, Hairspray, Kung Fu Panda, Wall-EEEEE, and probably TITANIC will end up with sequels.

Yeah, there is definitely a difference in planned trilogies and forced sequels. Most of the best sequels come from the planned category.
I think the a great example is The Matrix. The first is fantastic, and then the next two are so unbelievably forced...but trying not to seem as if they are. And because the second and third were SO crappy, it lessens the esteem in which the first is held.

Exactly. It actually has a negative effect on the first film, which usually has some merit.
So they crap on everything, just to make a buck.
I know...
(wwaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!)
I'm just over it.

Posted: 9/9/08 at 10:37pmI agree best12bars. Sometimes I forget how good the first film is because the corny franchise becomes the legacy. Like Rocky. And The Bad News Bears...And many more but those two jumped out of my head.

Posted: 9/9/08 at 10:45pmI loved the last Rocky, and think it is just a hair below the original film. I agree, though, that mostly, the sequels are inferior to the first films. The Mummy is the prime example of this. It is, easily, my favorite adventure film of all-time. The sequels are even something that I ever wanted to see, again.
