Bush's approval ratings are down to a paltry 34%, and Cheney is down to a dismal 18%. There are rumors of Cheney stepping down after the November elections. I wish it was already November. I wish the Dems would have someone emerge as a true leader.

Would you not like to meet the 18%?
Cokie Roberts was funny stating that Bush is only worried about his legacy and the Administration cannot focus on the tasks at hand.
i don't think Cheney will step down unless he has a real health issue...there is too much pride in this administration for any drastic change like that to be made
18% is pretty good for an old man who shot someone.

Here's the link on Cheney from the Drudge folks

As much as I dissaprove of Bush there are no details on how they conducted this study. I have no idea who they polled or if they only polled certain parts of the country. (Which I have seen before.) If anyone could find more information about how the study itself was conducted I'd be happier about hearing these results.

And regardless, we're still stuck with them.
I actually think there were two .pdf documents that contained some of the data.
http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/poll_bush_022706.pdf
http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/pdf/poll_katrina_022706.pdf
The poll involved 1018 people.
272 Republicans
409 Democrats
337 Independents.
November is still a long time away folks and who knows what smoke and mirrors will happen between now & then.
34% strikes me as frighteningly high. What are they feeling loyal to him about these days -- his "making us safer?" Making "America stronger?" "Spreading freedom?" Keeping "traditional values" intact? Or maybe his expert brush clearing in Crawford.
409 dems to 272 repubs? 337 independents to 272 repubs? no bias there, huh?
from their pdf, courtesy ywiw and cbs themselves.
Beyond bias, I'd be most interested in knowing how the Republicans polled voted.

What the poll shows is that Democrats sit around waiting for someone to call and ask their opinion so that they can hyperventilate about how the sky is falling.
gop: approve 72, disapprove 22, don't know/no opinion 6
dem: approve 9, disapprove 86, don't know/no opinion 5
ind: approve 29, disapprove 61, don't know/no opinion 10
Actually, since the Republicans usually steal off a lot of registered independents and conservative Democrats to win elections, I think it is probably a decent sized sample. In recent years, there have been more registered Dems then Repubs, though this gap is closing.
Bwaysinger, you are right. That is probably the most important figure, because the independents have determined the past few elections. They are the true swing vote.
according to a 2004 report from the annenberg center, a sample of 67,777 registered voters from october 7, 2003, through november 16, 2004 showed party affiliation to have narrowed to 34.6% democrat and 31.8% republican from 33.7 and 29.9 in 1999-2000.
this poll has it at 40.2% to 26.7%. that's a decent sample?
party affiliation (pdf)
in 2004 according to cnn's final exit polling, the independent vote went 49-48 for kerry, hardly the determining factor in the election.
independents are way overrated and are split pretty much right down the middle, just like the country. winning an election at the national level right now depends on bringing out the base.
cnn exit poll
Papa, if that split went according to this poll, Bush would have lost both the popular vote and the electoral college.
If you grab the independents firmly to your side, you win.
Republicans seem to forget that Bush barely won this last election. And, many think there were some irregularities in some key states that may have influenced the actual results.
Historically, the Republicans have been better at getting out their base. So, even with a smaller amount of registered voters, they can still prevail. Democrats are terrible at getting out their base (Coupled with allegations of specific attempts by Republicans to prevent the Democratic base from actually voting.).
Regardless, I just do not think this is good news for Bush and Cheney. We will just have to agree to disagree.
if that split went according to this poll
that's kinda my point.
i agree that if you can rally the inds to your side, you'll win, but i don't think that either side has done it convincingly in the last 3 or 4 presidential elections. so it's incorrect to say that the independent vote has swung the election. the base has won it.
of course it's not good news. when a major news organization is touting a flawed poll that shows a ridiculously low approval rating, it's not good.
Not good enough. I want single-digits.
As a comparison, Nixon was at 27% before he checked out.
While we split hairs over the polling sample, does anyone really thing the actual population is far more favorable? If so, please instruct me as to why, say, even half the country would feel a sense of renewed confidence in this administration at present?
Oh yeah, gas is 36 cents cheaper that just after Katrina. Forgive me. Dumb question. I retract it all. He's teaching us to give up our addiction to oil, and clearly getting advice from James Frey, the addiction specialist.
