I happen to like it, despite the fact that it would be mainly for show.

i love it
I hate that thing. It looks ridiculous. And what's with the quill thing perched on top of it?
It's the same thing the Empire State Building has. Only this time, it serves no purpose...
There is something I just can't place that makes me really dislike that design. I am in favor of the plan to rebuild some form of the old World Trade Center (which I was honestly not an fan of the design of either) I think that would have a much greater emotional and psychological impact.
The spire is my least favorite part, and like the Empire State Building, they are sticking it on to make the thing the worlds tallest building. The whole process has been very tacky.
Well, for the ESB, the point was to ward off airplanes....(and to beat out the chrystlar)
ummm... radio and tv antennae, anyone?
I much preferred Sir Norman Foster's design...

Not nearly as nice as the Twin Towers. But Bloomberg has his mind set on building a stadium, so who knows if the Freedom Tower will ever get built.

Looks like it may not happen.

If you read about the building, the "quill thing" is a broadcast antennae. I wasn't sure about the design at first, but when I looked at various renderings, I like it. I also like the fact that it will contain wind turbines to provide 20% of the building's energy. It is definitely an eye-catching design that is quite modern and could be a major icon. I hope it works out.
I have read that the "quill thing" would not actually be able to do TV or Radio broadcasting because the design being off centered could not support the proper weight. I really dislike the design of the building though so I pretty biased against it. The Empire State Building was given a spire to ward off airplanes, yes, but the exact design was instituted solely for the porpose of making it taller than the Chysler.
You'd think that they would have commissioned the safety parameters first, before they went ahead with the designs, the resdesigns and all that. Think of all the wasted money, time, and effort with the "competition" that won't amount to anything.

I thought the Empire State Building has a spire because it was originally a dirigible mooring mast.
