Did anyone see the segment about the freetarians on 20/20? These crazies that seek to survive solely on food that they pick out of the trast...they aren't too poor to buy food or anything, they're trying to make a statement about how much food we waste. Now, I agree that the average American wastes an appalling amount of food, but there's got to be some better/more effective/less disgusting way of going about making a change than this!
Some of them are even giving people on the subways/streets food that they've picked. How wrong is that?!? It's one thing if you want to pick for your meal, but I can't believe that they'd dig out a half a sandwich from the trash and pass it off to someone else. Do they tell them where they got it? What if they got sick from that?
Surely, there must be something else they can do, like organizing a program (similar to ones they showed in the segment) working to get still safe excess food from supermarkets/restaurants, etc that can make it to people who need it without having to be picked out of a bag, where it has co-mingled with God knows what else!
It's Freegans!
It was disturbing for the most part. But during the segment they mentioned City Harvest getting leftover stuff from supermarkets? (Or am I making this up in my head.)
For the most part the Freegans seemed more interested in the trash from supermarkets and restaurants...
Acutally.. Freegans. I came really close to puking. I have no appetite anymore.
Ahhh...I knew freetarians didn't look right. I must've had fruitarians on the brain...another odd lot! "Don't kill that carrot!!!"
