GLAD wants Gay Marriage to be legal in the last 4 remaining New England Sts

Big Applause for GLAD!!!

The group that helped legalize gay marriage in two New England states wants to do the same in the other four by the year 2012.

GLAD - which stands for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders - announced the campaign Tuesday, the fifth anniversary of the key court decision legalizing gay marriage in Massachusetts. GLAD also backed the case that led Connecticut to start allowing gay couples to marry this month.

Executive Director Lee Swislow says that by using know-how and experience from those fights, it wants to bring around Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island by 2012.

Per GLAD website:

Today on the fifth anniversary of the Goodridgedecision, GLAD announces the goal of “Six by Twelve”: ensuring that same-sex couples in all six New England states will be able to marry in their home state by 2012.

“We can make New England a marriage equality zone by strategically combining existing legal, electoral, and on-the-ground know-how to fast-track marriage in every New England state,” said GLAD Executive Director Lee Swislow. “By 2012 we not only can have marriage equality throughout New England, we can have a road map for the rest of the country.”

I'm GLAD for GLAD!

It's ridiculous that this is even an issue. Same with abortion. (Pro-choice). These are what I call "non-issues," and should not have to even be discussed. Sadly, the US is a fundamentalist country, and makes issues out of the littlest things. New England by 2012? How about US by 2012? I think Denmark (where I am right now) will be legalising it soon, but they have almost-equal civil unions (not that it's a replacement or substitute).
