What are some of your favorites?
I think it's kind of cool that the gangster flick is one of the few genres that has retained its sophistication from the '40s while also upping the ante within the realm of realism.

Little Caeser
Angels with Dirty Faces

Beast of the City - one of the best when it comes to pre code crime dramas - Walter Huston is great in this one

HA! I know the actor who played the killer in the fake "Home Alone" gangster movie - his name is Michael GUIDO! How perfect is that?
I'm partial to Godfather 1 and 2, Goodfellas, and The Departed.
I recall watching "Casino" at a movie theatre near me - in a town South of Chicago that has a strong organized presence. Sitting behind me were a couple of "goombahs" who kept talking during the movie. I soon realized they were recognizing the character in the movie as being based on guys they knew in real life(the character played by DeNiro, Joe Pesci, etc. were based on real Chicago mobsters). I decided it was best NOT to complain about their talking.

There is nothing (to me) that measures up to Goodfellas. It's been on my top ten for 17 years.
The Godfather Parts I and II, Goodfellas, Casino and A Bronx Tale.
Goodfellas
The Godfather
Road to Perdition
this is my favorite genre so there are many:
*no brainers*: godfather trilogy
scarface
goodfellas
casino
mean streets
taxi driver
dog day afternoon
carlito's way
once upon a time in america
the untouchables
there are so many others, but those are at the top of my list.
'I'll Sleep When I'm Dead' is a great one that's always overlooked.
Haven't seen too many of them but I did really like Casino
Godfathers I/II
Snatch
The Italian Job
To Catch a Thief
I am only reiterating ones already mentioned, but here is my list:
--The Godfather, Parts 1 & 2
--The Untouchables
--Road to Perdition
I really enjoyed Lucky Number Slevin. Very slick. And of course, Goodfellas, The Godfather Trilogy, and New Jack City.

GODFATHER I and II
The original SCARFACE, not that fatuous De Palma horror.
GOODFELLAS, now and forever the anti-GODFATHER
THE SOPRANOS
There's another little British film called THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY that is much worth a look. Not a great film, by any means, but there's a lot of interest. Starring Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren.
