Good question.

The film has become even more topical than ever. Apparently, there are some similarities to be seen as well.

"It's just sort of hard to see "gay agenda" and "best picture" in the same sentence without stirring up the memory of those rather controversial events."

When Poland says "gay agenda" I think he just means an agenda of acceptance.

The fact that the movie is mostly about Milk's political career and doesn't only focus on his relationship with his lover should make it easier to market.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Reminscent of the 1997 "Are you a Forrest Gump person or a Pulp Fiction person?"

You mean 1994? I was neither. My film that year was The Shawshank Redemption.

And Borstal, you REALLY think Van Sant is a better director than Ang Lee?! Wow....

At first, I thought the same thing, but they both really have their merits. Personally, I think Ang Lee has the edge in narrative and emotion (Eat Drink Man Woman, Sense and Sensibility) as well as drawing brilliant performances from actors (The Ice Storm, Brokeback Mountain). But Van Sant does have genius artistic flair and can deliver both the mainstream (Good Will Hunting, To Die For) as well as some edgy art house works (Your Own Private Idaho, Elephant). While both directors have their misfires (The Hulk, Lust Caution, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, Psycho remake) I do find Van Sant to be the least consistent of the two.

I think Van Sant is gifted, too, but Ang Lee's body of work remains superior. ICE STORM holds up beautifully, and manages to grab me every time I watch it (it's one of the definitive "November movies," by the way). I think Van Sant has made some self-indulgent films. ELEPHANT just didn't land for me. I saw no point of view (I know, I know, that's supposedly the point -- but why revisit Columbine with no point of view, other than a creepy sort of NAMBLA angle on two teen killers?) I have fought many people on ELEPHANT, and I realize it has its fan base.
