"New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson, a vocal gay rights leader, will open President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration with a prayer on Sunday's kick-off event at the Lincoln Memorial.
"I am writing to tell you that President-Elect Obama and the Inaugural Committee have invited me to give the invocation at the opening event of the Inaugural Week activities, We are One, to be held at the Lincoln Memorial," Robinson wrote in an email to friends."

Uh, no. Robinson will be giving the prayer at the first day of the inauguration events, not at the actual inauguration itself.
You don't believe that Obama would go back on his word to a right-wing religious fundamentalist, do you? He's got his priorities all in order.

Oh, that IS disappointing.
But Robinson's prayer WILL be at a nationally televised event with the Obamas in attendance, won't it, Pab?
Won't it?

Is this on television? I's love to see Bishop Robinison deliver that prayer with Barack and Michelle in attendance.
That would be beautiful.

Joey, do you really think Obama would jeopardize his hard-won standing with Psycho Rightwing Religious Fundies by appearing at the same event as a gay person? On television yet?

"The event that Bishop Robinson will participate in is on Sunday, Jan. 18 – the first day of formal inaugural festivities in Washington. It will be broadcast on HBO, which will provide a free signal so that people who don’t have HBO can also watch it, said Linda Douglass, chief spokesperson for the presidential inaugural committee.
Mr. Obama and Vice President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. will attend, and the event will include entertainers whose participation is still being finalized, Ms. Douglass said."

Actually the article says:
It will be broadcast later that night on HBO, which will provide a free signal so that people who don’t have HBO can also watch it, said Linda Douglass, chief spokesperson for the presidential inaugural committee.
Did you intentionally leave out the words LATER THAT NIGHT because they saddened or embarrassed you, pab? Or did the NY Times amend the article at the link after you posted it?

What I posted was copied directly from the article when I posted it. If it was changed later then it was amended by the NY Times. I was not saddened or embarrassed by anything.
I've found the discussions about the various preachers interesting reading, hence my posting of some of the articles on the subject but it matters not to me who will be praying where or which network will be covering what. There are more important things to think about than what I consider the overblown controversies concerning the Inauguration events. I'm more interested in what will happen after the Inauguration is over and actual governing will have to take place.

I think it's nice that you are able to compartmentalize his actions (or the actions that are his by extension), but I don't seem him as living in a vacuum, with this aspect divorced from the aspect of him running the country. I'm pretty sure most people - well, some people - are more concerned about how he will govern than than which Christian preacher(s) he has at the inauguration. It doesn't change the cynicism of it all.

"Rick Warren complimented Barack Obama's invitation to openly gay Episcopal Bishop V. Gene Robinson to pray at the inaugural kick off event on Sunday.
“President-elect Obama has again demonstrated his genuine commitment to bringing all Americans of goodwill together in search of common ground," Warren said in a statement provided to Christianity Today. "I applaud his desire to be the president of every citizen.”
Warren and Obama have continually been taking heat from members of the gay community since it was announced that the California megachurch pastor would give the invocation at the swearing-in ceremony next Tuesday. Robinson was one of the earliest critics, saying "it was like a slap in the face.”
“I’m all for Rick Warren being at the table,” Bishop Robinson told The New York Times, “but we’re not talking about a discussion, we’re talking about putting someone up front and center at what will be the most watched inauguration in history, and asking his blessing on the nation. And the God that he’s praying to is not the God that I know.”
There is speculation over whether Warren will pray in Jesus' name or not. Robinson told the Concord Monitor that he doesn't yet know what he'll say, but he knows he won't use a Bible.
"While that is a holy and sacred text to me, it is not for many Americans," Robinson said. "I will be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer. This is a prayer for the whole nation."

I do feel very confident that this president-elect understands us and stands with us in the issues that are important to us. Of course, we're going to hold his feet to the fire. ... Can someone explain that? Who else's name would he be praying in?
And the God that he’s praying to is not the God that I know.
Well, scripturally speaking, I think that Warren's God is closer to the "real" God.
