Although, I think the wearing of the sports jacket would be more jarring than this girl in the tux jacket. If you were just scanning the pages you wouldn't even realize it was a girl.

But like Matt pointed out above, letting a girl wear the guy's outfit opens a whole other can of worms. I wasn't even thinking about guys horsing around, I was thinking about a MTF wanting to wear a dress.

I don't think it's clear cut homophobia (or really transphobia), but I don't think the school's intentions are probably 100% honorable, either.

If it isn't homophobia then why is the Principal and school officials going out of their way not to speak to the media? By ignoring the issue is only leading the speculation. Until the school or Principal comes out and says it's not because she was gay, I'm going with what the student is saying.I would have assumed the school would have anticipated such a story going viral and they would have addressed this very early on,especially since their state got so much controversy with the prom scandal. If it were a different State I would say yes, it isn't always about homophobia. Looking at the entire case and the way the school has handled it speaks volumes IMO.

Well, someone could counter that with plenty of gay women can wear dresses (or in this case, a drape that gives the illusion of wearing a dress) without flipping out over it.

I think it's a muddied issue, but I think you have to pick your fights. I think the girl here is picking the wrong fight, but that may be because she and/or her family haven't worked through the fact that she is transsexual.

I also question the interviewer and the editing of the piece. Skewed much in the girl's favor? Why the lingering shot of the Church Street sign cut to a closer view of just the word church? We aren't hearing both sides but I am weary of the knee jerk reaction of screaming HOMOPHOBIA! There are plenty of more cases that are much more blatant, and insidious.
If it WAS homophobia why wouldn't the Principal be out there vehemently declaring it wasn't? That is usually the case. One can view his failure to comment as an attempt of not adding fuel to the fire and hoping the whole thing will blow over.
