Gay Pride?

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I was just wondering who among famous Broadway stars are homosexuals. I just saw some pictures from the 2005 Gay Pride, and I was unsure of who was what. I already of Cheyenne and Chris Sieber off the top of my head.

Thanks, and sorry if this is weird...

Are we sure about Cheyenne because he came to my college like 2 years ago and was definately into girls then.

re: Gay Pride?

How silly. Cheyenne has been with his partner for five years now (check the interviews with Wayman Wong at http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/92143.html and http://www.playbill.com/celebritybuzz/article/88179.html) and very out about being gay in a number of other interviews. It really amazes me how people can get such wrong information. And how is it possible that yet another thread has started on this same subject so soon after the last (somewhat controversial) one?
Well, as long as we're here, this is my list of OPENLY gay actors/singers/dancers (only the guys on my list, someone else can compile one for the ladies.) It's a work in progress. In fact, I just added two more names today.
All of these men have either come out in interviews or have been referred to as "openly gay" or "out gay actors" in reputable news sources. This is not a list of people thought to be gay or even known to be gay but who have not come out. These are what the press refers to as "openly gay" or "out gay" performers.
Some of these men are well known, others less so, and if you're interested in knowing more about them, do a Google search.

Why "Heroes?" Because they are out? Big deal. That just makes them "Out."

Yep. Anyone else who doesn't clamour about it is a bad person.

And my opinion is invalid because of my gender and sexuality.

Look what I've learned!! YES.

Some of our biggest heros are those who are locked in a closet, in pain, who feel as though they can't live life as the person they really are.

re: Gay Pride?

I understand why these actors are admired for being out, in a time when not many are. It's a lovely example and will allow future generations of actors to be open with their sexuality.

If that's not heroic, it's at least very cool.

re: Gay Pride?

Well maybe not heroes to you, Sueleen, but heroes to me and to many like me who find inspiration from their courage in coming out publicly. And yes it does take courage for anyone to come out, and even more so when it's to the world, so to speak, especially when their agents and managers and publicists may be telling them it's career suicide. If it weren't something scary, then few people would have any reason to stay closeted. They are certainly role models to young gay people who worry that being gay may be an insurmountable obstacle or who feel ashamed as they discovers their orientation. You can be as cynical as you like, but I'm not, and therefore these people are truly heroes.

On the other hand, note to others here who have mentioned actors who are not out. This thread is about gay pride so I think we should stick to the ones who've come out in the press. The other names you've mentioned cannot be added to my list because they are only out to certain people, and as far as the media is concerned, openly gay means you've come out in an interview, article, news report, etc.

And to all of you out there who say "Eslgr8 has gone on a rant once again," well yes I have, and it won't be the last time. I feel strongly about this.

gee. Lucky us. And I bet you still think you're "open-minded." Don't worry, I know you won't answer me.

re: Gay Pride?

Emcee, I've made my thoughts clear on this, and you have too. We simply don't agree. The issue is complex, and I realize that there are gay actors who may feel that they have every reason not to come out. I happen to respect openly gay actors much more than I do those who refuse to answer or even take questions about their "personal life" at the same time as virtually every straight actor lets the world know in one way or another, directly or indirectly, that he's straight.

re: Gay Pride?

What's the difference between a straight actor who is private about their personal life and a gay actor who is private about their personal life?
#19

re: Gay Pride?

If you've made your thoughts clear, there's no need to lecture me yet again, now is there? You're not going to change my mind, like you said, we simply don't agree. Go on, continue having your "respect," while blatantly disrespecting the dignity of privacy. It's lovely.

Do we really have to go through all of this again? This got pretty ugly last time. Can't we just leave it at that?

You have Elton John on there but not Stephen Sondheim?
#22

re: Gay Pride?

Very true, WonderBoy. Even if you are a public figure, you are entitled to a private life.
#23

re: Gay Pride?

I haven't added behind the scenes people to my list, so there are no composers/writers/directors, etc. My list is of performers, those who are most likely to fear the consequences of coming out. There are many many very talented and out creative people who just happen not to be on my list.
#24

re: Gay Pride?

I'm not saying that people have to say who they're dating, or sleeping with, or have dated or slept with, or what they like to do in bed. That's absolutely private. On the other hand, I'm not convinced that declaring one's sexual orientation has anything to do with a "private life," certainly not as it relates to the private life of a straight person.
And...
I'm going to see The Musical of Musicals: The Musical tonight and won't be at my computer again till long after you East Coast people have gone to bed.
So bye for now...

re: Gay Pride?

Not to mention the fact that some of the people on that list did not "come out" but were forced out. At least one was caught dick in mouth. Do you think they would have come out on their own?
