Gay Pride flag and connection to Judy Garland

I was reading an interview with Lorna Luft in which she stated that the rainbow flag was directly connected to her mother. Now, I am a huge Judy Garland fan and understand her connection with the homosexual community but it never dawned on me that the flag would be the connection. Is it true?

Are either one of your kids [Jesse 22, and Vanessa, 15] into showbiz?
OK, how fast can I say this? No. My son graduated from college in business, and my daughter is majoring in cell phone. I have normal kids. That’s my best achievement in my whole entire life. It’s my children. My daughter and my son, when they were really little, we were driving through West Hollywood. My son said, “Mom, can I ask you something? What’s that flag?” And I told him that was the flag for the gay community. And he said “It’s a rainbow.” And I said “Yeah?” And he asked “Does that mean it has something to do with your mom? And I said “Duh!” They loved that!

That is so not true. The original Pride flag had eight stripes - teal and Magenta were removed because of the cost and ease to manufacture for the mass market. The real story can be found in a book called "Gay by the Bay" by Susan Stryker and Jim Van Buskirk. It also includes the meaning behind each color stripe.

When you research things like this, you often find several "real true" explanations. For example, the "Rainbow Flag" was created in San Francisco in the 70's, which is a fact that cannot be denied....except....as Wikipedia points out, other nations, groups & entities had been using a "rainbow" flag for decades, maybe even centuries. So was that the time when Gay Pride became identified by a Rainbow? Or was it when Judy Garland sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and homosexuals would coyly identify themselves as a "Friend of Dorothy's"? Or was it when the Stonewall Riots broke out (Coincidentally or not) aroudn the time of Judy Garland's death? In any case, Rainbows are certainly identitfied with both Gay Pride and Judy Garland.

wasn't there a court case of some sort about someone who claimed to have sown the first rainbow flag used as part of a gay celebration? the gay "Betsy Ross" as it were? or am I confusing that with the creator of the Memorial Quilt?

We have a Pace flag that hangs in our sanctuary on occasion.

I know :)

And there's hope in the windows.

Is the same minister there? The woman? I loved her sermon over lust, where she started on about how she wants this thing so bad, and it ends up being a new Volvo.

Simply amazing.
