Posted: 9/8/04 at 3:20pmWhat do you suppose would happen if every Gay, Lesbian and transgendered person walked into their job and changed their tax status to "Exempt" - and then on April 15th refused to file taxes. (aside from all of us going to jail - talk about party!)If we are all going to be denied our basic human rights as citizens, and be treated as "second class" then maybe we should all act like it. I hate to be this way ....but....

Posted: 9/8/04 at 3:22pmThat's something I've wondered, also. They can't have us be "the same as everyone else" and seperate us also. You can't have your cake...

Posted: 9/8/04 at 3:27pmExactly - If we are not "Covered" by the constitution, then what makes us obligated to pay taxes in the first place. Actually Matt - i'm ready for that piece of cake and a big martini!

I would suggest to you all that you funnel that rage into getting the other guy elected. No, he's not perfect, but he's certainly more tolerant. You might not get all you want immediately...I think this is one of those issues that may have to be "baby-stepped" in...but you won't be outlawed under his watch.
Here are some very simple things you can do:

papa - i would like to respectfully and humbly request that you give it a rest, just for a minute. I have come to really respect your awareness, and goodness knows, you've made me laugh out loud on many occasions with your ability to cut through the bull. Even though I haven't had the pleasure, I understand from people who have met you that you can be disarmingly charming and gracious. I also assume, working within the industry as you do, that you are not unfamiliar with the daily lives of gay people. So, please, even though your points may be taken (and in the calmness of objectivity, imminently discussable) there are times when things should be tread lightly around - and I really believe you are sensitive enough to understand that.
This is a horrifying situation, because it's driving many of us into feelings and thoughts that I think many of us had put behind us. It's hard to fathom that, in this day and age in this 'land of the free', that we have to have these fears and concerns.
For myself, I try as hard as I can to remain centered through it all. I read A LOT of the Dalai Lama's works to try to understand how to fight agression with a peaceful heart. As we see here, it ISN'T EASY. I firmly believe that we as a group (as loosly defined as it is) do not have it in our hearts to harbor such lothing and contempt that we feel driven to right now. I WANT to believe that, in the end, we will come out stronger and more whole - but the birthing process of this new age is painful and soul-draining.
May our shared experience of this time bring us closer together, and may we not descend to the level of ignorance and hypocracy that is being thrust in our faces - even as we continue to try to just live our lives.

Posted: 9/8/04 at 3:49pmI respect your opinions DGrant. But as co-founder of an ACTUP chapter and having done lots of Queer work, a peaceful heart don't get you very far (except a quicker and more peaceful death) I'm older now, so it may take even longer to get me worked up, but DICK Cheney is succeeding.

Midtown - I FULLY respect your position - and have applauded much of the work that agressive activism has accomplished. I still look to the guidance of Ghandi, King, Mandella and The Dalai Lama to keep peace in my heart, if not my actions. Of course, look what happened to all of them
Nevermind, lock and load.

I was having my version of this dialogue with friends ... at the Sunday demonstration before the convention ... and we talked about how the nastily divided country is ultimately a positive. There's no way you can wear rose colored glasses right now -- when someone says "you're with us or against us" in about 27 ways on 27 subjects--including your own rights ... and value as a human being--you know EXACTLY where THEY stand. Thus, you sure as hell know where you stand. There's no euphemizing the hateful point of view, so you know in your own heart how frigthened and angry you are in response. I believe that such recognition -- perhaps true epiphanies, like RobbieJ's -- galvanizes people, pulls them out of their denial and reactionary lives, and creates a different mind set. For some, it means honing survival skills to function in a society that's increasingly built on the DIFFERENCES between people, not the similarities. For others, it means finding a voice to cry out in fresh outrage -- with a clear, strong voice they might not otherwise find in a "kinder, gentler" climate.
As Ghandi said, "you must BE the change..." Maybe that's a dark gift of this era and this regime: we must all, quietly or loudly be the change in our own lives, and in the process change for the better all the lives of those who'll follow us.

Posted: 9/8/04 at 7:04pmI do feel the pains, robbiej. And, I hope SOMETHING can get those gay Americans out of the bars, bathhouses, circuit parties, etc and into the political process.

JRB, DGrant, thoughtful others... Here's a quote from no less than Oscar Wilde that perhaps serves, pointedly and poignantly:
"...I have no doubt we shall win, but the road is long, and red with monstrous martyrdoms..."
Wilde, writing to George Ives.
It's quoted in the brand new book by David Carter: STONEWALL: RIOTS THAT SPARKED A REVOLUTION. Suffice it to say, there has never been a better time to revisit Stonewall.
re: Gay Rage#41
Posted: 9/8/04 at 7:35pmyou are correct, Auggie. I fear we are nearing a new Stonewall.

Posted: 9/8/04 at 7:38pmjrb - it is VERY questionable just what percentage of gay men are spending their lives in bars/bathhouses/circuit parties/etc. - quite a few of us have nothing to do with that, and are very politically engaged.
re: Gay Rage#43
Posted: 9/8/04 at 7:42pmI want to be clear that I don't care if people go to those things--I was merely trying to briefly refer to those gays who do nothing to support or make their civil rights better in this country.

Posted: 9/8/04 at 7:44pmThis might sound a little mean, but are you inferring that all gay men who go to bars/bath houses/et cetera could care less about politics and their constitutional rights? That sounds a little stereotypical.

Posted: 9/8/04 at 7:51pmI know you're not trying to, but it seems that way. You just refered to them as "those gay Americans".

cripes--yes, I said those gay Americans who do.
I was using gay Americans for the irony.
