Access Hollywoods tonight was all about how the quivering LA suits are a nervous wreck this weekend about the film's commercial appeal. But come on, it didn't open wide like KONG, and didn't cost 200 million or even 100. Today it platformed, respectably, into a modest number of theaters; it's hardly available at every multiplex, which would make it must-see opening weekend fodder. Unlike, say RENT (don't start--back off you zombies), this film is not *expected* to have a great deal of crossover appeal, so if it is moderately successful between now and 1/1/06 it will be considered boffo, judged according to a very different yardstick.
But if it continues to sweep prestigeous awards, like MILLION DOLLAR BABY, it will quickly become the end o'year, must-see film. The one you dare not miss or you'll be outta the loop. America is all about The Loop. I think that's the likely scenario--by 1/15/06, you will simple have to have sseen BROKEBACK to be in. That's our culture -- always about a short list of what's hot. This movie, despite the fear, is hot, hot, hot.
