Update: George Zimmerman's wife tells two different stories about presence of gun.
From the Washington Post, on the incident where George Zimmerman's wife accused George Zimmerman of threatening her and her father and breaking her father's nose:
Shellie Zimmerman, who has filed for divorce, initially told a 911 dispatcher that her husband had his hand on his gun as he sat in his car outside the home she was at with her father. She said she was scared because she wasn’t sure what Zimmerman was capable of doing. But hours later she changed her story and said she never saw a firearm, said Lake Mary Police Chief Steve Bracknell.
For the time being, “domestic violence can’t be invoked because she has changed her story and says she didn’t see a firearm,” Bracknell said.

I worked at a Domestic Violence agency for 7 years. It is NOT AT ALL UNCOMMON for a victim to walk back her statement and try to "take it all back" once the danger has passed. These victims have lived with their abuser for years- they almost never call the police after the first attack. The abuser is almost always calm and loving- except for those times when he is not. They don't want the man they love to go to jail- because they love him and because it might make him angry Again. It's self-preservation.
And I am sure Florida (like almost all states) have DV laws that allow for persecution even if the victim declines to testify. In Illinois, where I live, laws have been passed that allow police and 911 operators to testify to what they saw or heard because of this- a victim can take it all back- he never hit me, he doesn't have a gun, even say "It was all my fault" and the police can counter that with what they observed when they arrived: She was crying, there was a red mark on her cheek, or the 911 operator can testify they heard the abuser yell "I'm going to shoot you."
Every day this guy has a screwed up life is fine with me.

I'm not about to apologize on behalf of George Zimmerman but the guy needs some serious counseling. It wouldn't surprise me if it turns out that his soon-to-be-ex-wife unwittingly interrupted a suicide attempt. The killing of Trayvon Martin and the ensuing criminal case wrecked their marriage. And the combination of guilty conscience, impending divorce, and massive weight gain are probably taking a toll on him psychologically. I hope that the few folks left who actually give a fig about him encourage him to get some help before he kills either himself or someone else.

He killed a child. It's so sad that the trial took a toll on his marriage. Somebody should really be thinking about his well being after he got away with murder.
"He killed a child."
He made a mistake, an egregious error in judgment which led to the loss of life. Once again, I'm not jumping to his defense here. It's just that I personally haven't quite worked out perfection yet. And at the end of the day, I suspect that there are a few folks on the planet who care about his well being like his own parents. George has caused a lot of pain in the lives of others around him.
If he doesn't get counseling to help him take ownership of his actions and try to rebuild his own life, I pity the next woman that he woos and heaven forbid he should sire children. George entered into a domestic violence dispute in a previous relationship. He's only 29 and likes vagaga so this cycle could repeat itself for decades.

He stalked and killed a kid for looking suspicious. He refused to listen to what the dispatch told him to do and took things into his own hands. Killing a child is not a mistake. He had SO many chances to turn back and he kept F*CKing it up. That's not a mistake, he's a racist asshole.

He should be in jail. Not getting counseling. He still sees nothing wrong with the fact that he killed a kid.

"He should be in jail. Not getting counseling."
The thing is, he's not in jail and no amount of vitriol heaved in his direction is going to resurrect Trayvon Martin. That was a tough verdict for many of us. But, it's my understanding that FL's judicial system is the only one they've got for trying facts and criminals at the state level. FL deems him worthy of a second chance at freedom, right, wrong, or otherwise.

Because Florida has got a lot of ****ing problems. Lets just throw up our hands and say "Oh Florida!" He's the same asshole who gunned down Trayvon. Counseling isn't going to help that. He's just a ****ty person. When he ****s up again, and he will believe me, is Florida going to let him walk again if he claims Stand Your Ground? It's OJ level ****. Gets away with murder and thinks he untouchable. Thought there'd be nothing wrong with keeping people at gunpoint.
Theatrefan4, may I suggest Javero isn't your antagonist in this debate, or perhaps non-debate? He doesn't seem to have suggested that Zimmerman should not be in jail. The fact remains this is a seriously ****ed up guy, a menace, who, as much as it appalls many of us, remains at liberty. That being the case, there is nothing inappropriate, much less apologistic, about suggesting that the guy needs counseling to hopefully prevent him from inflicting any more tragedy.
The fact that the counseling may well not be successful, is no reason to dismiss the suggestion or hope that he gets it. It certainly couldn't hurt.
Now, what Javero really needs needs to be taken to task for is his modest regard for Volver.... :)
