DISGUSTING!
He's used the N word his whole life, but he does not see himself as a racist!

I hate Atlanta so much. It's so condescending that they pixilate out the N word and say it contains "words we can't say on TV" and then wishy-washily make the effort to tell you what the word is, which in fact you CAN say on TV... I just don't know. Did they really have to call the local attorney to find out the repugnant sign was protected free speech? And what was with the reporter admonishing the man that there are ways to make his point without being divisive? Why didn't she just come out and say, "It would be so much more tasteful if you could camouflage your racism like we did when we visually censored your sign and told viewers how shocked -- shocked I say -- we were by it."
ETA Not that it was racist to pixilate the sign, but it was camouflaged. Basically, she was telling him his offensive ideas would be so much more palatable without the N word.

As Joe asked, is that a phrase?
ETA: Charming. I just googled the phrase and the dreaded Urban Dictionary link displayed this: "To fix something in a very cheap way, using whatever materials are handy."
How "urban" of that rural redneck guy.

Posted: 10/11/09 at 9:04pmSorry, I didn't see Joe's question. Yeah, I heard that a lot growing up in the South. As in, when the antenna broke on someone's TV and they put a coat hanger or aluminum foil on it. In recent years it's been replaced with Jerry-rig. Not sure why.

That's an evolution of "jury rig."

Posted: 10/11/09 at 9:26pmI wish the reporter had made helpful suggestions. "How about 'Colored Rig It,' it's still offensive but not as divisive."

Posted: 10/11/09 at 9:32pmhuh. lol It is a Southern thing. I always heard it and cringed each time. I have also heard people say, "rigger nig," as if that somehow makes it less offensive.

Posted: 10/11/09 at 9:34pmI can't see HATE being protected by Free Speech.I think the politician's in the area must be just as bed as Cletus. What's sad (and scary) is this is happening all over the country. I posted a thread a few days ago about how some redneck was planning to take over the government. I've been hearing that Youtube has more videos organizing hate groups than ever.

HATE, like HOPE, isn't an object. It's an idea. When the idea is spoken, it is protected by the first amendment of the Constitution.
Thank God, who wrote the damn thing.

Posted: 10/11/09 at 11:08pmI heard the version the man used a lot when I was a kid. It kind of morphed into jerry-rigged later, I guess. I am no expert.

How about, "Bigot Rig It?"
Can't get any cheaper and stupider than that. Rhymes a little better, too.

Posted: 10/12/09 at 4:45pmI believe "Jerry Rigged" came from the later days of WW2 when the German military was using weapons sabotaged by the resistance in the arms making plants. They were to fix things on the fly using things found on hand.

I can't help but want to post a sarcastic "Let Me Google That For You" link for any of the many sites with etymological accounts of the questioned phrases. But at this point it's definitely unnecessary.
Yeah, that guy is scum. Setting aside the sign, I'm actually more grossed out by the put-on shows of support for civil rights leaders and the NAACP. I think it's deeper than him being dumb, something about that speaks to a real premeditated kind of race-obsessed nastiness.
