Is it just me, or does anyone else get frustrated when they hear an upbeat, jazzed up version of "Summertime" from PORGY AND BESS? I mean, it's a lullaby to a baby and should be sung as such. I am all for artist interpretation, but jeez!
I generally don't like upbeat versions of songs that are "supposed" to be slow -- but I'm willing to give artists a chance to experiment.
I think you need to listen to this. Seriously.
Am I the only one who really could go through the rest of my life without ever hearing Summertime again? It is a beautiful song, but I am just over it.
Here are the liner notes to the Gil Evans/Miles Davis Porgy and Bess.
Liner Notes
The definitive version is from the wretched film. The orchestration and vocal are perfect for the song.
