Getting a job as a flight attendant...

(Preface: I just graduated with a BA in December)
I'm pursuing a career in theatre, and it is looking like I may end up at a theatre this season...however, I am also exploring my back-up options. One of those options is a secret desire of mine: being a flight attendant.
However, I just searched on the Careers section of almost every single major airline and NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM are hiring any flight attendants. It's the only back-up job which I have had trouble with in even getting to APPLY.
Is it the poor economy to blame? Or was it even before that with the rising oil costs? Or is the job just THAT hard to get into?

HA! We're the same person. I've always thought about being a flight attendant as a back up.
It is difficult to get into. It's hard just to get accepted to flight attendant school, and then you still don't have the job.

actually if you get accepted in a specific airlines FA school, you DO have a job after successful completion, BUT......why on Earth would you ever want to do that?
You are always on call as a newbie (I was called out of the Orange Bowl game for a flight, ARRGH)
It is not exciting nor romantic.....people yell at you, throw-up on you, swear at you in foreign tongues.....trust me, I was hired by National Airlines in the 1970's, and it was fun for about a week. And if you think flying for free or just for sales tax is fun, the LAST thing you want to do on vacation is fly.

And the costumes aren't what they used to be.

Posted: 4/7/09 at 2:04pmI have several friends in Air Canada working as flight attendants. The economy might be the issue as they(AC) are hiring BUT really just for the high period summer months. After that they will prob go into layoff. A lot of senior FA's are also not retiring due to the economy which means no new slots are opening. I know i read that WestJet load's had dropped ( keep yer minds outta the gutter!)over 20% in what would normally would be a high season ( spring break period). Do you have any 2nd languages ? ALWAYS makes u more attractive to hire w airlines. Look into regionals as well as the major Airlines. And may u be spared from "reserve!"

Are you not aware of all the job cuts and salary reductions and benefits elimination that have gone on in that field for the past decade? I would assume there are plenty of trained flight attendants looking to be rehired who are in line ahead of newbies for job openings.
How about a career in the exciting world of haircare? (I mean, if we're limiting ourselves to gay cliches.)

You can probably get a job if you do this:

Posted: 4/8/09 at 8:51pmCanada used to make it (still may) very difficulet for Americans to live and work there. They had this weird Catch-22...to work for Air Canada you had to live there, and to live there you had to have a job.....hence they typically only hired Canadians
