so tonight on 60 minutes andy rooney decided to show how much of a jerk he can be by taking time to criticize girl scout cookies, he didn't even pronounce riboflavin correctly during his little tirade.
ugh, what a jerk "The Girl Scouts get to keep about two thirds of that. I don't know exactly what they do with it. All kinds of good things they tell me."
like the girl scouts are really bad and go and buy drugs or something, umm how about freaking trying to fix the self esteem issues that american girls have today because of the freaking media, oh yeah, andy rooney, where you work!!

It never ceases to amaze me how people can be so cruel and critical... about everything.
Sad.
I'm glad I didn't see it...

That made me sad. I am a Girl Scout, and his criticism of the cookies that we sell is mean.
Most of the money that we make from the sales we give to charity, so why does he care about the riboflavin?

Posted: 3/27/06 at 8:50amI just e-mailed CBS about that. I was a troop leader a couple of years ago and I loved every minute of it. The money that is raised by cookie sales goes to fund almost everything that the Girl Scouts do for the rest of the year. The money is also used to support the membership of girls who otherwise would not be able to afford to be a member of Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts will pay for the girl's dues, her uniform, any trips or activities, meals if they are not provided, or at least help to meet the rest of the money if the parents can only offer a partial amount. This organization is amazing in helping girls' self esteem, self motivation, and builds life long friendships. It really disgusts me that some crotchty old man got a bug up his butt and decided to attack their fund raising methods.

Even though they're hell on my diet, I always make it a point to buy a box of Thin Mints. The Girl Scouts, unlike that other scouting organization, have no problem accepting gay leaders, so they're A-OK with me.
But don't let Andy get to you. He's just an old grump that some people find endearing. I don't think even he takes himself too seriously anymore.

Posted: 3/27/06 at 10:24amAs a former Girl Scout (and the daughter of our leader!) this really disappointed me. Especially that I actually saw, as Kel pointed out, what the money went towards. Whenever a girl in out troop couldn't afford to do things, it was no problem because of the cookie sales. Being in Girl Scouts was one of the best experiences of my life and it makes me relaly mad when anyone talks negativly about it, especially when it has to do with their big fundraiser!

The Girl Scout program is so much more important than people realize.
It provides an accepting and nurturing environment in which girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
It fosters inclusiveness, and has recently partnered with the Dove Self-Esteem program, to help raise healthier girls who feel good about themselves.
How anybody could find anything to criticize in that is beyond me.

Posted: 3/27/06 at 10:35amWait, do people actually STILL pay attention to anything Andy Rooney says? Really? I got into the habit roughly 20 years ago of flipping the channel or pressing mute after the last feature story on 60 Minutes after years of suffering through his inane, moronic, neo-conservative, offensive, whiny little tirades. Hearing his voice makes me lunge for the remote in almost Pavlovian fashion. Don't let him upset you. EVERYONE (under the age of 80) thinks he's an annoying old crackpot. Retirement is LONG overdue.

Well his tirade is completely ridiculous because the very things he attacks are what makes it all a "good thing"
Really? A MAJOR company is making these cookies and NOT putting their name on it so it can remain a Girl Scout Branded product? And they don't plaster all over the media all the good they are doing but do it relatively quietly? For SHAME. Clearly these companies should steal every thunder they can from little girls. And only charging them .80 a box so they can maximize their profits?
Hey ANDY - guess what? Keebler and Kellogg's? They make dozens of products which they sell themselves at a MUCH high markup (CEREAL ANYONE).
IT'S A FUNDRAISER. A box of Peppridge Farm Milano's cost $2.99. What's horrible about $3.50 - especially when the majority is going to help this organization.
And just about every cookie on the market has riboflavin amongst other ingredients.
He's done some off the chart commentaries before - but every thought in this one is completely backwards.
Give me Joe Piscopo's Andy Rooney any day of the week....

sheesh people...I didn't find it offensive at all, rather informative. He asked questions.......that's all. I didn't find him attacking any "venerable" institutions, but rather asking questions I've always wanted to know the answers to......like who really makes them.
You all immediately assume it's an attack..........all he was doing was asking for information.....
I don't see his riboflavin stuff, based on this, seems ok to me
Riboflavin is B 2 and is important to energy metabolism (processing nutrients like protein, fat, carbohydrate and alcohol that have calories to a form of energy that the body can use - ATP), normal eyesight and healthy skin. Foods high in riboflavin are milk, yogurt, cheeses, meat, leafy green vegetables, whole and enriched grains. Riboflavin is an essential vitamin and is easily destroyed by light. Oral contraceptives may cause a riboflavin deficiency as well.
Riboflavin is important to both vegetarian and carnivores (meat eaters). If you include the above vegetables and grains in your diet, don't abuse alcohol, you will probably consume sufficient amounts of riboflavin.

Elphaba -
No disrespect to you - but have you ever SEEN him deliver his commentary? You can read his stuff and argue whether or not it's attacking - but his delivery leaves no doubt.

yes I have.........he can be a pain, but again, he is asking things I would ask....what is done with the money, who makes the cookies, (who know it was keebler....I certainly intend on finding out keeblers political sway...as I donate my money to groups with similar ones)etc.....this is no different than any citizen asking about the war in iraq, or about where all the money for Katrina went. You cannot have it both ways.....perhaps he says it in a way we would not, but it's his right, as an American citizen.....just as it is our right to not watch him. Hell, my mother was a girl scout troop leader, my sister was a scout, and I think most here, rather than realizing the questions being asked are important, immediately attack the questioner......
You know when we question the war, the right always reacts just like you all do, like we're evil and un-American.
This is the same. Can you not just see the words, rather than the tone, or suspected tone?
Should he have said it differently? Sure.....but so should have of the childish and mean posters here.....the point is to understand the questions, and see if you want to know the answers.....if not walk away.
Just because of Andy Rooney, the Girl Scouts will not be investigated by Congress (which is how you all are acting)....they will go on, and I will still buy cookies.......look past the tone to the message
and Craig I didn't feel disrespected.....not a problem.

Posted: 3/27/06 at 11:04amQuick question: Is Andy really considered a neocon now? I'd always thought he leaned slightly liberal in his writings, but I haven't read/paid attention to him for years now.

Riboflavin:
"Riboflavin (E101), also known as vitamin B2 or vitamin G, is an easily absorbed, water-soluble micronutrient with a key role in maintaining human health. Like the other B vitamins, it supports energy production by aiding in the metabolising of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Vitamin B2 is also required for red blood cell formation and respiration, antibody production, and for regulating human growth and reproduction. It is essential for healthy skin, nails, hair growth and general good health, including regulating thyroid activity.
The chemical structure of riboflavin also helps in the prevention or treatment of many types of eye disorders, including some cases of cataracts. It may assist bloodshot, itching or burning eyes and abnormal sensitivity to light."

And this is a bad thing to put in cookies?

My only problem with girl scouts and their cookies is that they only sell them for a small portion of the year. :)
Poo on You, Andy Rooney!
