I always want to support Laura, but damn that was SO bad. The writing was painful and the premise is unsustainable for a series.
TO is washed up, and even if the Seahawks don't sign him I don't think he has much of future in acting. The fact that he's the best they could get for Perry's character to interview says it all.

Yikes! Sounds like another Playboy Club for Laura Benanti

Yes, I barely recognized her at first as she was wearing big glasses that hid her face. I always found Julie brilliantly hysterical on Six Feet Under, but she wasn't given anything to do in this pilot.
Two Tony winners have been reduced to this crap. Send them both back to the stage in projects worthy of their considerable talents.

I wasn't paying attention for a moment, and then I heard her voice and looked up -- unmistakably her as soon as she spoke!
It didn't do anything for me but I didn't hate it either. I historically have trouble watching the Friends actors in anything else, but that's my issue, not the material's.

Only Lisa Kudrow has really made itpost Friends for me, but she was the only actor I liked allthat much, really (I've seen a few episodes of Episodes, and do find it funny).
This was *awful*. Maybe not, from one episode, as bad as that show Perry had a year or so ago, but... Wow--if this is what NBC chose from their Fall schedule to highlight during the Olympics, it sounds like they have another lame year. I guess the material is largely at fault, but I actually never really like Benanti much in anything I see her do on the screen--her appeal, for some reason I can't place, doesn't carry over for me personally from the stage--although she was fine in small doses on The Big C and Eli Stone, but anyone remember the controversial eating disorder "comedy" Starved? umm yeah...

Posted: 8/9/12 at 1:49amI agree, that was not a great pilot. What a shame that all that talent was wasted. However, I've seen many shows with weak pilots improve over their first seasons as they found their voices, so I'm not sure if I'll dismiss it this easily.

Posted: 8/9/12 at 2:26am30 Rock immediately comes to mind. Horrible pilot (at least I thought, but I remember others being disappointed), but while I admit 30 Rock has never been "can't miss" tv for me, it fairly quickly and drastically improved (as did Parks and Recreation after actually a pretty rough half season).

Posted: 8/9/12 at 9:00amWhy does my TV keep trying to make Matthew Perry happen? They should just go on ahead and name his next series, "Fetch." It can be about a quirky guy who accidentally builds a community at a dog park featuring neighbors from across the social strata.

Posted: 8/9/12 at 9:07amI actually thought Benanti was just fine. Yes, she's got another TV part with food issues, but she managed to sell the character and make her seem among the most grounded among Dr. Hartley's therapy group members. Or whatever.

I loved his short arch so far on The Good Wife.

Posted: 8/9/12 at 8:01pmI never watched FRIENDS, but I have never seen Matthew Perry in anything I liked. (What was the short lived thing he was in last season about a sports arena?) But I liked Laura Benanti a lot (not much happening for her yet) but the incidental characters - the other people in the group - are amusing, especially the sweet Latina lady. I suppose much will depend on the balance between the sports network job plot, and the group grieving plot.

Posted: 8/13/12 at 7:07ami liked Perry in the "other" Sorkin version of 30 ROCK (was it called SUNSET something? the one where Cherry Jone's wife was playing Cheno-as-Sorkin's girlfriend). Some of his movies aren't bad. They at least went off-the-grid for his supporting cast in this one...jury is out.

Posted: 8/13/12 at 7:09amoh, and pretty much in love with EPISODES. Mainly for the British couple, but also for the two supporting network pawns to the blond showrunner. However, none of the post-FRIENDS series has had the strength of Kudrow's COMEBACK and WEB THERAPY. i just kinda tolerate COUGAR TOWN.

Posted: 8/13/12 at 10:05amDoes Perry have some kind of universal Producers-style contract wherein if a show he stars in folds, he gets more money than it it was a success?

Re Studio 60:
The year 30 Rock and Studio 60 both premiered, Tina Fey was at some red carpet event, and an interviewer complimented her dress. Tina relied, "I here Aaron Sorkin has one just like it, but longer and not as funny".

Posted: 8/13/12 at 2:55pmi LOVE that Fey quote...and as to GO ON, i think the supporting cast is really great so i have high hopes. i know not everyone is the Sorkin fan that i am...but i have to say, when his FARNSWORTH INVENTION and Stoppard's ROCK & ROLL were across the street from each other that season, i saw both within a week...one a treatise of the invention of television, and one on the rise and influence of rock...and Sorkin's was by far the more lucid, actable, empathetic vehicle. Both covered details and history that was at times arcane, but Sorkin's penchant for characterization and dialogue at least usually wry if not funny....saved the day.

I feel like I'm in the minority here. I actually enjoyed it. My folks did as well and so did my aunt and uncle who watch a lot of TV. I'm looking forward to tommorw's episode.

I also enjoyed it, and it really has a nice ensemble feel to it which seems rare nowadays with so many shows focused on single characters.
I'm really excited to see the new episode tonight, and am really rooting for this to do well.

It seems that Laura finally has a show that is doing well. The show's ratings are staying strong. I have last night's show recorded I will watch it later. Unfortunately, for Andrew Rannells, 'The New Normal' slipped 12% from its previous week.

Posted: 9/26/12 at 12:34amThis is beyond silly for me to even think about, but... One thing that bugs me about the concept, is in the majority of group therapy, you aren't really encouraged to mix the therapy sessions with your personal life. Yet last week, the whole episode was about what a jerk Perry was for not doing exactly that...
