Vika elevated her game and Serena in turn really tightened up in that 2nd set. For some reason, the US Open always seems to be the biggest mental hurdle for Serena after her 1999 title run. In the 2nd set, her footwork went to pot and she started pressing.
It seems that the great champions always win a major or two by luck. If Vika could score more free points off her serve, she would have walked away with that trophy. Serena did just enough to win before Vika could somehow turn things around. In Vika's position, Clijsters, Henin, Masha, and Venus in their prime would have sent Serena packing.
Well done, Serena!

Posted: 9/9/12 at 8:14pmIt was awesome. But I have to admit, my heart felt for the other girl (Aza-what?). She looked like she was going to burst into tears.

Stockard...,
I'm a huge Serena fan but was gutted too. I'm somewhat partial to players who were properly trained and who possess really good technique off the ground. I love Azarenka's court positioning, movement, footwork and racket preparation which combined are extraordinary for a 6' tall gal. I think she's the best mover on the women's tour currently which is astonishing when her size is considered.

Agree. She's not ranked #1 for nothing. She is a tremendous player.
It's always hard to see the runner-up when it's been such a close match.
She should be proud of the great tennis played today.

Women's tennis has been ruled by giants for the past 20 years or so. Azarenka, Sharapova, Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Ana Ivanovic, and Kvitova are all former #1s or major title holders who are at least 6'. Of the group Azarenka is without peer in terms of her mobility.
The 2nd tier is made up of the elite players around 5' 9" in height like Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Serena, Kim Clijsters, Jankovic, Svetlana Kutznetsova and Caroline Wozniacki.
The shortest champions and/or former #1s in recent memory are Justine Henin, Jennifer Capriati, Martina Hingis and lil' Arantxa Sanchez Vicaro (at 5' 6").
That's why Mary Carillo refers to the women's sport now as "big babe tennis".
