I know I start a thread about these women all the time, but everytime I hear one of their voices, I just get excited and depressed that majority of these women are virtually forgotten and their struggles and artistry have been pushed aside for manufactured garbage on the radio that pretty much makes a mockery of them. I am at work listening to Dinah Washington and my coworkers keep walking by giving me funny looks, but I don't care. Forget Fergie, Mariah, etc. These women are the true DIVAS and their memory and voices should/need to live on forever.

DJ - they are NOT forgotten, not by a long shot!

I mean by the general public. If you just go out and ask the general public who majority of these people are, they would stare at you, dumbfounded. I mean, Billie Holliday is pretty much known by all, but everytime I talk about Etta James, I have to go, "Have you ever heard 'At Last'?" But, they know the song, not the artist.

Oh, DJ - most people are doing well if they know who THEY are, much less anyone else.
Those who appreciate that music know they are goddesses - but they, and the women themselves I'm sure, are very thankful there are younger devotees like yourself who are so excited by their art.
Preach on!
What are some of your favorite songs by these women?
Ella Fitzgerald--"Night and Day," "Mack the Knife," "My Funny Valentine
Etta James--"Damn Your Eyes," "I Just Wanna Make Love to You," "At Last"
Billie Holliday--"I Cried For You," "Summertime," "My Man"
Dinah Washington--"Smoke in Your Eyes," "Manhattan," "If I Had You"

And let's not forget these women as well.
Have you ever heard Peggy Lee's "Big Spender?" All I have to say is WOW!

Can’t post a link, but you might be able to find a performance of her definitive version of “The First Cut is the Deepest” on that forbidden site.

Etta James does a great "Sunday Kind of Love", too.

Her flawless Muscle Shoals recordings were re-issued a few years ago, but I think the CD may already be on moratorium. If you can find a copy, snatch it up.
