I'm only a freshman in college but I thought it would be a good time to think about it.

I was considering AMDA since I know it's a 2 year program...I've just heard that AMDA's not a good place to go after high school...but I've heard nothing about going there after college...if it's a good idea or not...

any other ideas of good places to go for Grad School?

Boston Conservatory...i met one of the master's MT students who absolutely loves the program. (not that that means it's the best one out there, i'm just saying -- he was happy with it!)

There are very few graduate programs, MFAs, in MT. AMDA would not be considered a grad program, in that regard, because it's not a degree granting institution. However to answer your question, no I've never heard of anyone going to AMDA after already getting a college degree, BFA or any other degree. I have heard, though, of some who have gone to AADA after obtaining a BFA. My recommendation is to get into the best BFA program you can if you want to pursue MT. Not many working actors in MT have an MFA. There are more who go into straight drama MFAs (usually after working professionally for a period of time) and Tisch has an excellent grad program for that.

there are people at AMDA who have degrees in non-performing fields who want to get more training in a short amount of time.

there are also performers there from other countries who want to get into american performing and want a quick program.

but erinrebecca is right -- it is not a degree-granting program

There really aren't many MT grad schools out there, and I don't know of ANYONE who has an MFA in musical theatre. If I were a performer looking to go to grad school, I would go for acting, as that is the thing I think most undergrad MT schools are missing, and then you'll be qualified and trained to work in both MT and straight theatre.

NYU has a Grad program in Musical Theatre Performance. It's an MA degree, 2 years, and it's in the Steinhardt School, cleverly disguised as vocal performance. Really excellent program!

I agree, going to grad. school for acting could be a good idea. In my case I've always thought about going to grad. school for vocal performance because I want to get into opera, as well as musical theater. It really depends on the person.

I would think going to a conservatory would be a good idea (if you already have a strong liberal arts education).
