A cautious response because it has to actually get voted on in the NY State Senate before he has anything to sign.
We've seen how easy it is for the NY Senate to completely screw things up .....

"David Paterson told a dinner arranged by the Empire State Pride Agenda Thursday night that he expects the state senate to pass the legislation soon."
I wouldn't bet on it. Right now Governor Paterson's approval rating is at 19%. The state is in serious financial trouble with "shut down" being only weeks away unless there is some decisive action. There is high unemployment in the state. Paterson has not been able to bring the Legislature together on anything since he took office. If he gets gay marriage passed while the state is shutting down operations, he can kiss his asspirations for future politics goodbye.
ETA: The only way gay marriage will pass in NY is if Obama wants it. Paterson has already had a huge dust up with Obama and Obama is working behind Paterson's back to get him out of office. The state Democrats are kissing Obama's butt and will sweeten up to whatever way Obama wants them to vote so they can curry favor and get Obama to endorse them in their campaigns.

Things are so bad financially in New York that Paterson wants to force everyone to get new license plates as a way to increase revenue.
$25 for the new plate and an extra $20 to keep your same plate number. Brought to you by Democrats who are desperate and have no other ideas.

I'm not totally optimistic, either, but to be fair, the Assembly already has passed it.
Goth, Patterson may not have the political oomph to pass this bill himself, but this bill isn't about him. Gay marriage is a much bigger issue - it was around before Patterson became governor and it'll still be around long after. The other way of looking at his abysmal polling numbers is this: It gives the Senate one less reason to refuse to sign - giving him political capital now will hardly turn him popular. He's so powerless as to be practically irrelevant, which again, makes the vote on the bill much more than a referendum on his popularity or lack thereof.

Plum, social issues always take a back seat in times of crisis. If the legislature passes gay marriage while the state has to shut down operations due to lack of income, do you think any of those legislators are going to be re-elected? Gay marriage versus black mothers not getting their welfare checks? How's that going to play out in the media?
As I pointed out above, the current NY Democrats will vote the way Obama wants them to vote. Because of the dustup that Paterson had, Obama will see to it that he is replaced and all Democrats will be trying to curry favor with Obama.

Considering how much controversy gay marriage has been stirring up in the past few years, I wonder if people will see it as a "petty" issue at all. Anyway, you can always say that people getting married stimulate the economy with their weddings. :)
That said, my instinct is that this has...maybe a 40% chance of happening. The Senate has plenty of conservatives in it, and while I'm sure the numbers in favor of gay marriage have been turning as advocates slowly persuade legislators to see the light, I don't know if those numbers are all the way there yet.

Doubt it will happen any time soon.
The state is on the verge of fiscal collapse. When the workers & creditors start getting the california treatment - IOU'S instead of money-the **** will hit the fan.Patterson is flailing about in 6 different directions. The legislators treat him as a joke & ignore him. Right now, he is nothing more than a figurehead. The power is with Silver & Skelos.
If they try & raise taxes again, it will just exacerbate the exodus of people & business from this state making a bad situation worse.
It will be taken up at some future date but it will not be now.It ain't going to be a happy Christmas in Albany
