Being a Canadian, I'm not familiar with the university/college system in the States. But I find myself in a situation now where I can consider graduate studies in English. I would love to study in New York for a year, but I have some questions:
- How good are NYU and Columbia (and any other schools in NYC) for graduate studies, particularly English literature? How hard are they to get into?
- Canadian tuition is very cheap compared to American institutions, but I'm having trouble finding out how much it'll cost to study in the States. Can someone give me an idea?
- I know Manhattan is damn expensive, but can anyone provide a range in rent prices, and what one would get for them? How do NYU and Columbia students survive? How is rent in the boroughs (particularly Queens, ie. Astoria)?
Thanks!

Thanks! Not much info on Columbia, though. (But something tells me that's beyond my reach.)
Can someone answer my other questions? If Manhattan is so expensive, how can NYU students afford living on their own?
