"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

IT'S NOT A BLOODY BROADWAY SHOW! The only Broadway show I know of that had animation is Avenue Q!

Hints:

Billy Joel.
Once Upon A Time...
Charles Dickens.

OHHHHHH!

OLIVER AND COMPANY!

I thought you were talking about a Broadway show! My first guess was Oliver and Company, but then I thought, well, probably not many people know he was in that!

It's definitely from the opening of Oliver and Company. I don't know how "Once upon a time..." fits in though.

"Once Upon A Time In New York City" was the opening song, sung by Billy Joel, in the film - showing these images.

Bette Midler and Sheryl Lee Ralph also provided voices for the film. I loved how Joel, Lee Ralph, and Midler not only provided the singing voices - but the speaking voices as well. And Billy did rather well!
