Too many cooks delaying the project(s). Now Del Toro has been forced to quit to take other work, after a two-year delay.

Such a shame, Warner Bros.!

Posted: 5/31/10 at 7:19pmI may be alone in this opinion, but I just don't think we need another LOTR movie...and I would prefer to see Del Toro work from his own imagination than Tolkien's.

There is still a chance Peter Jackson may come through and direct it himself(although it does appear to be a long shot)

Only other director who comes to mind who I think could pull it off is Terry Gilliam. This is all due to greed and nothing more. I hope someone gets fired over this. MGM has delayed production on their two big money makers (James Bond and The Hobbit)They screwed Jackson over to the point that he had to sue them.

Now they are trying to make the two Hobbit films for peanuts knowing it will make tons of cash.Niki Finke has a really good article on this on her website. Lots of stuff you won't hear anywhere else:
"This franchise is too valuable to let languish much longer and the debt holders of MGM won't be happy when they realize that the director has walked because they've allowed things to fester so long and handcuffed the executives brought in under Harry Sloan to turn things around."

Excellent! Now that Del Toro is leaving, I might actually be interested in seeing this.
Although I think I agree more with Borstal. A two part movie based on THE HOBBIT? Who needs this?

"A two part movie based on THE HOBBIT? Who needs this?"
Warner Bros.
I hope their greed sinks the project now. They had no business splitting the book into two movies, and they had no business delaying production for a year while they whittled away at the budget and put creative constraints on del Torro and Jackson. I hope they kill their own two-part "cash cow."
Chances are, they'll fire Jackson altogether and get Chris Columbus to direct it. They'll shrink the budget down to $20 million per film, and add a third part.
They would if they could.

Jackson said he won't be doing it.
I am a total fan of these movies and very saddened that Del Toro is off the project.

I'm kind of OK with Del Toro not being behind the camera on this one. His films LOOK great, but always feel flat. Yes I was even disappointed in Pan's Labyrinth. Of course PJ's last outing with The Lovely Bones was pretty bad too, so who knows.
I also share the annoyance of turning the book into two films.

Posted: 6/1/10 at 9:49amAlso, Terry Gilliam seems to have major issues getting films finished on time and on budget. I don't know if I'd trust him with it. Shame about Del Toro. I love his work.

Posted: 6/1/10 at 9:57amDel Toro was the obvious choice. I know Sam Raimi lobbied for the directing job. I wonder if they will offer it to him now.Let's all pray they don't offer the job to Bret Ratner!

Peter Jackson said that if they can't find anyone who he approves of then he will do it himself.

So, apparently there is a 99.9% chance Peter Jackson WILL DIRECT the 2 Hobbit films. Makes me wonder if this was all planned. Who cares? I think this is GREAT news!
