Okay, let me just start by saying this was totally NOT MY FAULT.
I'm babysitting my 3-yr-old nephew, and he was playing at the kitchen table with construction paper and a pair of safety scissors. I turned my back to him for maybe 10 seconds to stir his macaroni...
I turned back and he had cut a giant chunk out of his hair! Right in the front! His parents will be here later today... what should I do: give him a buzz-cut or just fess up?
Please BWWers, my future is in your hands.

"Tell your parents that your babysitting style is "laissez-faire"."
Thanks, I needed that.
Fessing up is not looking like an appealing option. Can't I just superglue a toupe to his head?

Hmmm.. admit the truth and let the parents determine the best course of action, or take matters into your own hands and make things worse (and obvious).
Look - kids do things and not even the best parents in the world can watch their kids 24/7. If you sincerely were watching the child as best you can and turned for a few seconds while this happened versus leaving the kid in another room for 30 minutes while you chatted on the phone and cooked lunch - just tell the parents what happened.

Okay, you guys are probably right. Thanks.
At least he's my nephew and not some random kid whose parents I barely know. It's just a shame that he probably won't be staying the night at Auntie Aspen's house again in the near future =/

Posted: 1/7/07 at 3:52pmn69n: That's what I did to my sister's Totally Hair Barbie once. She had wanted me to cut it shoulder-length, but when I did the hair stood up and out, and she began to cry. As a desperate measure, I grabbed some Scotch tape and attempted to "tape" it back, to no avail. It was obvious, my sister wasn't fooled, and she began wailing. Finally, my mom awoke (it was early Saturday morning), took the doll and tossed it in the trash. She then made us go back to bed and went back to sleep herself.

He was being creative - A lot of kids cut their own hair like that - here's some proof:

Posted: 1/7/07 at 4:50pmWhen my niece was 3 I was watching her at her house. She was in the bedroom taking her nap (I thought). In those days my hair was long and parted on the left - with no bangs. My niece's hair was also long but she had bangs (fringe) across the front. Well, I was in the kitchen and heard this weeping and looked at the doorway and there she was - with her bangs cut off. Just stubbly short hairs where they used to be. Not only had she cut them off, she did it so she could look like me! Her mom handled it very well. (We both laughed a lot - when she couldn't hear us!)

I decided to cut my sister's hair when she was about 5 and I was 14. My parents were out with friends and I was babysitting. What made me think I could do it is beyond my imagination, but it sure "looked" easy when the pros did it.
Anyway, when my parents got home, my mom was not happy with my "artistry"...to put it mildly.
What happened with you is an accident, not "planned" like mine! Accidents WILL happen. Parents understand THAT!

Okay, my brother and sister-in-law didn't have a heart attack like I thought they would. They were a little freaked out, but they thought it was funny.
Looks like he'll still be coming over to Auntie Aspen's every week =)
They borrowed my clippers though--looks like he's getting a buzz cut anyway, haha!

Hey...at least you noticed...
One of my friends went to a meeting and left her 3 year old daughter with her husband. When she came back, her daughter was in bed...but there were huge chunks of hair on the bathroom floor. Her husband's response, "oh really..I didn't see it...."
Of course, this is the same guy who put his daughter to bed with her shoes on when she was about a year old. He's got a heart of gold, just misses some of the details...
