Happy Birthday to the divine Miss Channing!
from In Theatre:
She's a theatrical icon for her outsized performance as Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! (1964), a Tony Award-winning role she created and later reprised in several revivals. Channing made her first splash in the revue Lend an Ear (1948 ), building on that success one year later as the unapologetic gold-digger Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Other Broadway credits include Wonderful Town (replacing Rosalind Russell in 1954), The Vamp (1955), Show Girl (1961) and Lorelei (1974), in which she returned to the role of Lorelei Lee. Channing toured with Mary Martin in Legends (1986), a comedy that closed before reaching New York. She won a Golden Globe and was Oscar-nominated for her role as Muzzy in the film version of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

Time Magazine had this to say about Miss C in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, "Perhaps once in a decade a nove explodes above the Great White Way with enough brilliance to reillumine the whole gaudy legend of show business."

Posted: 1/31/05 at 9:18pmWhen I was in High school in the 70's, DollyPop took us on a field trip to see Carol Channing in " Lorelei" { Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" . It was the first time I saw her on stage and was mesmerized at her abilities. After the show was over, he asked her to come out and talk to us. Of course we nearly had to restrain Dollypop! She sang a few bars of " Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend.". Then she prsented me with a fake plastic diamond ring on behalf of our Drama Club. It was a significant moment of my life. A few years later, I was working at a facility for mentally retarded children in Missouri. We took them on a field trip to Kansas City to see her in Hello Dolly. Being well trained by Dollypop years earlier, I took the kids backstage to meet her and the magic was still there. I wish I still had that ring.

Posted: 1/31/05 at 9:32pmThe ring became a part of every Drama Club production from that pooint on. Marcia wore it as Gloria Upson in AUNTIE MAME. The girl who played Violet in MY SISTER EILEEN wore it. Lori Bressler wore it in PEER GYNT...and from there my memory gets foggy.
