Happy Gay Pride

Happy Gay Pride

Most of you will celebrate Gay Pride this weekend. Although here in the desert it's held in October/November.
Remember to celebrate our diversity, but also remember those who made it possible, and those no longer with us.
Remember Stonewall, Remember those others before us persecuted, and even killed simply because they were gay......Remember Harvey Milk, Remember Matthew Sheppard, and remember the thousands no longer with us because a government and a country refused to acknowledge (at the time) AIDS.

They are also part of why we celebrate. So take some time for a quiet moment to remember.

In case you do not know who Harvey was, he became the first openly gay man elected to any substantial political office in the history of the planet.

We will be home this weekend, but we will watch the 2006 Frankfurt Gay Pride Parade that we happened upon last June the day before we came home, and I was lucky enough to film.

re: Happy Gay Pride

and the history of our (rainbow) flag, generously lifted from
http://www.thecastro.net/

It was designed by Gilbert Baker in San Francisco and first appeared in a gay parade in 1978. The original flag was huge and was made at the Gay Community Center at 330 Grove St, near City Hall. The flag was made of white muslin and the stripes were sponge-dyed. There was no permit to fly the flag, but with a bit of wheeling-dealing by Harvey Milk, on the morning of the parade a small group of conspirators managed to raise the flag on the tall flagpole on the northwest corner of the Civic Center. It was a big hit and eventually became an international symbol for gay pride. Originally it had 8 color stripes. The two that are missing from the current flag are pink and turquoise. When they started mass producing the flags in the early 1980's, they couldn't get fabrics in those two colors, so they dropped them. In the beginning of the year 2000, The 30 X 20 foot flag that flies above Harvey Milk Plaza in the Castro regained those two stripes and as of September 2001, still has 8 stripes. What does that mean? I tracked down Gilbert Baker and he said that he replaced the 2 additional colors on the large Castro flag. The Rainbow Flag will celebrate its 25th Anniversary in 2003 and reverting to the original 8-color flag was in preparation for the celebration. I wonder if it means we all have to trade in our old flags for the new model, kind of in the spirit of planned obsolescence.

The colors represent:
HOT PINK = sex, RED = life, ORANGE = healing, YELLOW = sun, GREEN = serenity with nature, TURQUOISE = art, INDIGO = harmony, VIOLET = spirit

The flag in the Castro is now back to 6 colors.

Happy GP to all of you.

check out these video responses to "ask a gay guy's" 'Show your Pride' on youtube. Most are very sweet sentiments- there are a couple not so nice ones but I only saw two.

There're a fair amount of fruits WITH nuts, as well - thank goodness!

I'm going to be in San Francisco for their Pride weekend - haven't done that in years! Should be fun.

And Elph - that is such a cute pic of Harvey in your av!

re: Happy Gay Pride

The gay pride parade in Chicago is always the last Sunday in June. I hope to actually make it this year. For some stupid reason I always have rehearsal that day. I do this year too, but it's in the evening... so it might work out.

re: Happy Gay Pride

Oh I remember a gay pride in Chicago.....think it was 1994, riding on the Deek's float.....basically a flatbed truck with metal "walls?"...we had so much fun, I spent most of the time with the then current Drummer Boy, can't remember his name but a great guy, who got all excited suddenly and screamed "there's my Mom!!!" and she was in the crowd waving.....and then at the end the floats drove into Lincoln Park, where I "accidently" spilled beer on my ex when he came up to the float......although to this day he thinks it was no accident, well...maybe, I was drunk by then and who remembers?
I have always enjoyed Chicago parades.....

Elph - we have one more Sunday in June honey - the 24th is SF pride - which is next Sunday. I guess that heat in PS is getting to you. re: Happy Gay Pride

I just finished watching the most wonderful documentary on the Gay Games VII in Chicago! I got it through Netflix, so if you have a membership - I highly recommend it.

re: Happy Gay Pride

I'm watching Priscilla, Queen of the Desert right now on the brand new special edition DVD.

Is this all things "Gay Pride" to me? Hell no, but I'm glad we live in an age where movies of (shall we say) self-expression are allowed to see the light of day... and are released in special editions by major Hollywood studios (seeing potential profits as the primary reason). Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Go figure! Gays as a "target audience." Took 'em long enough to figure it out. But at least they did.

It's funny, I think I appreciate the trio of leads MORE now, having seen them in things like Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Superman and Memento. Talented actors, who weren't "afraid" to go for it in an initially little-known film like this.

It's not four-star cinema... still I'm entertained... I enjoy it for what it is... and I celebrate the fact that a movie like this was even made.
