*snorfle* Damn, I wish this was on LJ just so I could metaquote it.
Patronus, there is a song in the making in there somewhere.
First, there was "The Cat Came Back"
And now,
"Then Came Coulter."
First there was Katrina, who smashed the south without mercy,
followed by Rita, who finished the job Kate started.
Wilma rounded the trio, making sure Florida suffered for its sins . . .
Bum, bum, bum,
THEN CAME COULTER - Hypocricy's Hurrricane of Hate.
THEN CAME COULTER - The Spawn of Satan Herself.
THEN CAME COULTER - The Talking Head Who has no shame
The only thing that could make this any better would be Rove and Libby getting indicted today. Really, anything that makes Bush look the incompetent idiot that he is would be a great thing.
Oh, if nothing else, Coulter certainly has entertainment value...
onto Miers:
Thank God this finally happened. After denying that she would withdraw, they gave in. There's nothing more upsetting than thinking that they thought this was the best person they could find to fill, you know, only the most prestigious court in the country. It would have hurt the legitimacy of the court to have her there, considering how little respect she garners from the public.
Maybe next time they'll pick someone with actual qualifications in constitutional law...
"Maybe next time they'll pick someone with actual qualifications in constitutional law..."
Well, I hate to be nitpicky and contentious :) but it does slightly irk me when people say she does not know constitutional law as if one can be totally unfamiliar with the most important document in our whole judicial system and still pass the bar and become a practicing lawyer for many years.
Secondly, is it necessarily a bad thing to nominate someone who has not been a judge before? I mean Abe Fortas is one of my favorites( Gideon v. Wainwright! ) and he had no prior judicial expereience either...

BStyle - her responses to the Senate questionaire would indicate otherwise.
BStyle - I took Con Law about 15 years ago. I could address some issues, but in no way would I consider myself competent to sit on the Supreme Court and judge cases based upon my 1 year class in law school. And, I did pretty well in Con Law.
If she was not willing to give thoughtful, deliberate answers to the questions, then she does not deserve to be considered for the job.

Y - My friend who is a Bush supporter and someone that I took Con Law I and II joked and said that why did he not nominate her? She works in the GC office for a major bank, so why not her?
Y - Do you recall any of the questions from Con Law I exam? I do not!
There was a commerce clause question, and a question about prior restraint on commerical speech, (which I think is more permissible if there is compelling government interest - I am not sure if that is the exact wording of the standard).
I had a question about Riparian water rights on the Bar Exam. Go figure.
I can remember a few more questions, but the answers, well, that is a whole different issue.

Hmmm, YWIW??? as the next supreme court nominee... Brd for Attny General...
All I can say is that we are both more qualified than Clarence Thomas or Alberto Gonzalez.
But, I have a feeling after posting on this board a bit too much, neither of us would pass the initial vetting process.
Oh well, back to life as a coporate whore.
DGrant-Point taken. :)
youwantitwhen-I agree with you, I didn't want to see her on the court either but I was just raising the questions in general. Although don't get me started on the Senate when it comes to the Supreme Court...
In that world, there would be a very different President YWIW?.
I've been sick so that's all I have for the moment, it has been fun to watch the fireworks from my sickbed, you all continue to impress.
I just got over the ebola myself, so you have my sympathies.
Take care of yourself SP.
That is bad YWIW, I'm glad you are better now.
The worst is over for me, but I continue to be under the weather.
Thanks, I tend to forget to slow down and generally make myself sicker, not this time though.
I call every major illness an ebola -
Just a really nasty cold that lasted for about a week.
I am still not 100%, but good enough.
Airbourne (sp) tablets worked really well in fighting dem germs.
Take care of yourself. And remember, alcohol kills germs.
I'm a little late to the party, but want to add that I think that the whole Miers nomination was a ruse. I am reluctant to dismiss the President as a pinhead who would risk the wrath of his party's gatekeepers just to pay off a political debt to a few Texans. I have a sneaking suspicion that both Bush and Miers knew that her nomination would be DOA but nevertheless a distraction from the possible indictments of Libby, Rove, et al. Smart money is on Bush recalling Miguel Estrada who he couldn't get on the DC Court of Appeals last time out. Yeah, I'm a paraonoid fed of the other political stripe who thinks that the fix is in. There is a chinese wall of separation between Bush and Estrada that would give the GOP hardliners some comfort and Estrada has the perfect profile to help those same GOPers garner critical votes in the upcoming mid-term elections and pass the immigration reform business on down the line to Bush's sucessor from whichever party.
