Lansbury is very beautiful in those old MGM flicks. she also had a tendency to come off more mature than she really was and was often cast in roles that were much older than she really was.
i never saw "harvey girls" but i can say she was very pretty in "national velvet", but then she was upstaged by a horse oh and whatsherface with the violet eyes...LOL

Check out GASLIGHT, 1944. Angela's first film at MGM, directed by George Cukor. She plays the maid to Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotton.
Wonderful suspense film, if you don't know it.

Posted: 10/13/04 at 11:40pmLove Gaslight. Love Harvey Girls. I had the pleasure of meeting her last year when the television Academy honored her. By the way; she had nothing nice to say about Sondheim. She said he is a genius and she was blessed to have had the opportunity to work on his material. But as to working with him she shuddered and said " My mother always said if you had nothing nice to say about someone then don't say anything at all." Also interesting was the fact that after the affair some people had things for her to sign. She signed all kinds of things; but those that were standing there with Sweeney cast albums she passed by.

oh wow DAME that's an interesting story. something must've gone down between those two during that production that has caused her to be ambivalent toward "sweeney todd".

Angela as, Princess Gwendolyn, the villaness in THE COURT JESTER, opposite Danny Kaye and Glynis Johns.
Now there's a bit of trivia: Two Sondheim leading ladies sharing the screen, and about 20 years later sharing the stage in "Sondheim: A Musical Tribute."
Angela as Elvis' mother in BLUE HAWAII. Hmmmm.

Harvey Girls is among the greatest Judy Garland/MGM musicals. Judy, Angela and don't forget Marjorie Main, Cyd Charrise and Ray Bolger too. The Atchison Topeka and The Sante Fe song/dance won the academy award that year.
The Harvey Girls is said to have been MGM's response to OKLAHOMA. Funny story about that. It is also said that when Judy saw OKLAHOMA on Broadway her immediate response was: "The corn is high."

Posted: 10/14/04 at 9:36amLansbury's early career seemed to be filled with playing parts older than she really was. In The Manchurian Candidate, she played Laurence Harvey's mother. Actually, she was only three years older than Harvey!
