... now that "pragmatist" Thomas Friedman of the NYTimes has completely thrown in the towel over this administration?
"It has always been more important for the Bush folks to defeat liberals at home than Baathists abroad."
"Rummy wanted to crush once and for all the Powell doctrine, which says you fight a war like this only with overwhelming force. I know this is hard to believe, but the Pentagon crew hated Colin Powell, and wanted to see him humiliated 10 times more than Saddam."
And so much more...

Is this Bush's Ebb Tide??
First the tide rushes in
Plants a kiss on the shore
Then rolls out to sea
And the sea is very still once more

D.Allman's (New Yorker, Vanity Fair) new tome, ROGUE STATE -- AMERICA AT WAR WITH THE WORLD? I'm into now, and it's the best indictment of the Bush years I've seen.

Bush has new poll numbers today:
The Time poll has his approval rating at 46%, Newsweek a shocking low of 42% (Jimmy Carter territory). Pitting him against Kerry, per Time: 51% Kerry, 44% Bush. Camp Rove claims these are but a snapshot, and as much as I'd like to say no way, I have to agree. We're seeing daily shifts. I think we'll be seeing a roller coaster effect between now and the conventions, when each candidate gets a bump, and then more neck and neck. Most incumbents who've won have won by a landslide; most incumbents who've lost, ditto. Any forecast for this one depends on which side of the aisle one invests in.
But even before the conventions, let's of course keep our eyes on the June 30th "handover" (a euphemism that would be funny if it wasn't so meaningless) of "power" (ditto) to Iraq. The early summer will be a new benchmark.

Posted: 5/15/04 at 12:12pmThe handover would have to go off without a hitch for Bush to have any chance of being re-elected. He's in a bit over his head and I think if the handover happens it will be such a fiasco. Who needs Broadway when the evening news is so exciting?

I heard that on the BBC today that recent presidents up for re-election that posted these kind of poll numbers were as follows: Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George Bush, the elder.
I hate to count chickens before hatching, but will it all hinge for W on the Diebold black box voting machines and the 11th hour capture of Osama Bin Laden toward the end of October?

6 months is a long time. which could be a really goood thing, or a really bad one depending on which side of the fence you're sittiing on and how things break.
let's see how things look once the gop's 527's are up and running. richard mellon sciafe and a. jerrold perenchio vs. george soros and warren buffett in a tag team cage death match.
but you know me, keep on the sunnyside always on the sunnyside!
