#1Has anyone ever had a total knee replacement?
Posted: 4/2/09 at 10:36amI had one three weeks ago and it was probably the worst surgery I have ever had. It also seems to be taking a long time to recover. I am still on narcotic pain meds!

A neighbor had it done years ago. It wasn't easy on him initially, but it was worth it in the long run. He felt like a million bucks once he was recovered and walks for miles a day!
Hang in there. It'll get better.

I myself have never had one, but I did watch one in anatomy in high school. It is a brutal surgery, and i'm not surprised that the pain is still excruciating.
Get better, we love you!

Posted: 4/2/09 at 11:38amMy mom had BOTH her knees replaced my senior year of high school, several months apart. She got really stir crazy by the end, but she went from someone in constant pain because of her knees to someone with NO pain. It's worth it. Hang in there!

GCY, if you had a good surgeon you will reap great rewards from this surgery. Enjoy the narcotics while you can! (I mean that in a flippant manner, do not get addicted.)

Posted: 4/2/09 at 2:39pmThanks everyone. The good part about this is that I am in a very good rehab facility. The Physical therapy that I get is wonderful. They also put me on scheduled doses of Dilaudid 3x a day as well as PRN doses if I need them. Then They put me on neurontin to control the nerve impulses as well as Flexiril which is a muscle relaxer. I am actually getting better pain control than I did in the hospital.

Everyone I know who've had it managed to get through this bad time by sticking to the PT religiously. It does take a long time - but it will get better and they feel like they've been reborn! My neighbor is the only one who needed both knees replaced, had one done and then refused to take the PT or get the 2nd done because the pain was too much. It's been 6 months and she's still in pain.
I don't know how people can afford to have it done. I've been told I need it but I can't afford to be away from work.
