House mulls bill on food label removal

God forbid that you knew what was actually in your food!

http://www.boston.com/yourlife/health/other/articles/2006/03/02/house_mulls_bill_on_food_label_removal/

The bill would stop states from adding warnings that are different from federal rules. States currently add hundreds of extra warnings, indicating the presence of arsenic in water, mercury in fish, alcohol in candy, pesticides in vegetables and more.

"This legislation could overturn 200 state laws -- laws that the American people rely on every day to ensure the safety of the food they eat," Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said Thursday during House debate on the bill.

It is interesting that there are topics on which there is no public debate at all. The USA is out of step with many countries in the world regarding its position on genetically modified plants and animals, yet there is no discussion on the home front. The Dept. of Agriculture sets the policy and that's it. Now congress wants to restrict what states can do. At the very least, there seems to be a "states' rights" issue here.

A states' rights issue indeed. I agree with you, Grizz.

i agree that it's a state's rights issue, but if they are bound and determined to drive it through (and how many companies are probably pulling for this given the labeling issue) then they should simply adopt the most inclusive labeling standards imaginable. how ironic it would be if the companies crying over different labels are stuck providing a multi-page list of warnings with a can of tuna.

Oh this is rich, for those of us with food allergies this could be bad.

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

Of course if your die from a food alergy, then you could sue...provided that your suit wasn't defined as frivolous.
