Hello Everybody

Just wanted to say hello from South Africa. Got another ulcer today. Went to the doctor and he told me I need to take time off and relax. Maybe next month.
On a brighter note, going to see an Verdi's Oberto next week. The following week, I'll be seeing the Moscow All-Star Ballet. They'll be doing highlights from Tchaikovsky's work. The girlfriend is going to be happy about that. Not much of a ballet fan. Went to see La Traviata, it was a ballet. Great set, beautiful costumes and the balerina was wonderful. The guys wasn't that good. One guy, when he twirl in the air, looks like he was not controlling himself. There was times that I thought the bloke was going to hit somebody.

Posted: 6/22/05 at 1:41pmthe fact you can say another ulcer and be so blase about it is a little scary.

Posted: 6/22/05 at 1:45pmDamn, didn't mean ulcer. I meant another panic attack. Sorry about that.

Posted: 6/22/05 at 1:50pmWell still. I haven't had one panic attack or ulcer yet, so I don't think I would be writing about them so calmly.

The stress been very harsh lately. Our senior partner is getting pressured to show profit. So, us people in the lower half gets the full brunt of the pressure.
Hopping that the opera is going to be good so I can just forget about the problems for that one night. The last opera I went to wasn't very good, in term of production. It was an abridged version of Figaro with, get this, subtitles on top of the stage. It was a real distraction because people end up looking up at the words and ignoring the performance. The singers were all good, unfortunately the set and the costume did not do them justice.

My roommate has panic attacks... some are worse than others. But he talks about them to me, at least, like it's no big deal. "Oh yeah, and I started getting a panic attack..."
I love the ballet. Haven't been in ages...

Posted: 6/22/05 at 2:18pmI'm thinking about going to the Okavonga Delta. No sign of civilization except for the plane that needs to pick me up once my stay is over. Plus, we'll be living in one of those tree houses. Only thing I'm going to bring is my notepad for my play writing and other essential item. Cell phone, laptops, and any other sign of the modern world is going to be back home.

I just got tickets (very good seats, I splurged) to see
Turandot, at the Santa Fe Opera, July 6th.
I have always wanted to see this opera company and their venue, so i am very excited.
My partner often gets panic attacks.......they are definately not fun.

Turandot is SUCH a lovely opera! Great score, wonderful sets and great drama! I'm always surprised that it hasn't been "mainstreamed" and reworked like Aida or Boheme.
Fun Puccini fact: Turandot was his last opera. In fact, he died before he had finished it and another composer was hired to come in and compose the ending, from Puccini's notes and outlines. To honor Puccini, however, at the world premiere, when the opera got to where Puccini had left off, the conductor stopped the orchestra and singers, turned to the audience and said "It was here the maestro lay down his baton." And the curtain came down. What a brilliant tribute!!
Maybe it's the kink in me, but I think Turandot is the most romantic opera, with the Princess gambling her purity with that long line of Princes, before finally meeting someone she is terrified she wants to submit to! Sexy!!!
Enjoy, Elphaba!

Posted: 6/22/05 at 3:54pmI knew about Puccini not finishing Turandot and somebody else finishing it. Didn't know about the first show. That is a very moving and great tribute to a maestro.

i must say i'm not an opera fan, although i've never been to a real live opera production. and aren't they usually/often presented with "supertitles"?
now, ballet on the other hand ... i LOVE. was watching KIROV CLASSICS on dvd last night ... amazing! PETRUSHKA is spellbounding.
i've had heart palpitations before and my partner has had panic attacks. are you taking any medication?
re: Hello Everybody#14
Posted: 6/22/05 at 4:23pmTaking no medication. My doctor told me it's stress related. First time I've ever experienced it. Scary as hell.

Posted: 6/22/05 at 5:27pmI was bothered by panic attacks for quite some time. You are correct to get checked by a doctor and rule out a physical cause. I found that if I could "Do" something as an attack began, it would be lessened and eventually they stopped. I'd walk back and forth or jump up and down. I also was told that chewing gum was a useful tool-- and indeed, I found that if I chewed gum it would relax me. Hope those tips help.

"subtitles on top of the stage"
If they're over the stage, they're called supertitles. Subtitles mean the captions appear below the action.
