Hey hey! Help me find an audition song My school is doing Guys and Dolls for our spring musical and I am auditioning for the part of Sarah.
However, I need to find an audition song. Can ya'll help me?
To give ya'll an example of my voice: I'm a mezzo-soprano (bordering on soprano) & belter. The songs I perform best are "No Good Deed" from Wicked, "Send in the Clowns" from Little Night Music, "Rewriting History" by Kristin Chenoweth and "Angels" by Within Temptation. Hope that helps.
Thank you ever so much!

I was Sarah in my high school's production of Guys and Dolls! It's a great role and a fantastic show. I'm sure you will have a wonderful experience.

I'm also a mezzo soprano bordering soprano :)

For our auditions, we sang songs from the score. I didn't have to worry about an audition song. If I had to pick one though, I think I might have sang Til There Was You from The Music Man. I think its a good song to show your soprano range and beauty. Also, Sarah's songs are very classic, (well except maybe If I were a Bell :)) so I think you will want to showcase classic and beautiful qualities in your audition song. I think anything Rogers and Hammerstein would be appropriate.

In the end, do what you think is best for your voice and your take on the character. I'm certainly no expert, but I hope my advice helps a little!

Break a leg! You'll do amazing!

"My White Knight" from Music Man is a perfect choice for Sarah- it's almost exactly like "I'll Know."

Whatever song you select, and Marian's songs are a good place to start, make sure the song can be used for a while. You can't go off and find a new song for every audition. You will find that you don't have time to work on text and/or subtext. Choose a song you can do for years.

Auditioning is more than hitting the notes. Who cares if you are pitch perfect if there is nothing else to make you memorable? Sarah can be a dull role unless you can give it a push. Make her sexy, and for that matter, add some heat to Til There Was You. Nothing overt, but sneak a little naughty yearning into it.

"Til there Was You" is a better audition song than "My White Knight" because it is the basic 32 bar form and, it builds nicely. My White Knight is a good song, make no mistake, but only if you are asked to sing a second song. It has several false climaxes, and it might be tough getting their attention back after you hit an emotional high point and then have to pull back.

Look at other classic leading ladies too. Brigadoon comes to mind right off the bat.

Mister Snow from Carousel is another good possibility that comes to mind. You would have to shorten it or sing only a small portion of it because the song in its entirety is a bit lengthy for an audtion. It's smooth and beautiful, but also leaves a lot of room for adding your own character and charisma to it.
