My friend is auditioning for Godspell at Paper Mill and would like some suggestions on an upbeat audition piece. It has to be from a rock or pop musical. She would like anything but other Stephen Schwartz songs or from Jesus Christ Superstar/Joseph. She is a mezzo-soprano or a belter.

Please help out! Thanks guys...

I'm not really familiar with it, but Hedwig and the Angry Inch is a rock musical. I've heard from some people "down the grapevine" (wtf?) that it has great music.

There's a really good pop-ish song in The Scarlet Pimpernel (Home Again). Linda Eder sings it and it's simply fantastic!

Hope I helped a little re: Help out a friend...

"Somebody" by Jones/Schmidt from Celebration.

Not a rock song per se, but it can be sung as one and is funny to boot.

isn't it really late to be auditioning for papermill? i know people who have already been cast for the summer and they found out a long time ago.

just brainstorming rock/pop musicals themselves, not songs...

RENT (don't do it, though, bad bad plan)
Aida
Hedwig
Bklyn (i wouldn't recommend it, though)
Zanna, Don't
Scarlet Pimpernel
Little Shop
The Wiz (sort of)

also, Life of the Party from Lippa's The Wild Party is sort of pop-ish. The voice quality is, anyway.

look at the repertiore of pop/belt singers -- linda eder, sherie rene scott, etc. for more ideas. you might come up with something you haven't heard of before (NOT IDINA MENZEL-- most her stuff will be incredibly overdone)

It depends on what part she wants.. the female songs are all really different. If she wants to audition for Joanne than she sould sing a gospely belty type song.. My Strongest Suit from Aida maybe? If she wants Robin or Peggy then maybe something mellower like from Hair or a show from that era.. If she wants Gilmer, than she should sing a song that shows comedic ability... For Sonia, she should sing a more sultry song.. like from Chicago or The Wild Party...
