I'm trying to pick out a play to direct. I want it to be a contemporary play, preferably something with some dark humor. I'm thinking of doing August: Osage County, I'm not sure if that's overdone or not. Any suggestions?
Two of my absolute favorite contemporary plays are Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead and Autobah. Neither are particularly well-known, since that seems to be something your looking for. I believe you can find the scripts online. :)
What kind of theatre/organization is this for? How old will the cast be? I'll assume that since you posted this on the student board, it'll be a young cast (in which case August: Osage County would be a wildly inappropriate choice). If so, I highly recommend Stephen Karam's beautiful and hilarious play Speech & Debate.
It's for a college production, so everyone is in their 20s. I fell in love with Speech & Debate, but unfortunately a classmate of mine has already signed on to direct that show this year. Thank you for the suggestion though!
