Help with songs for colllege!!!

I have an audition coming up (March) for a Conservatory and I need to songs, one upbeat and one ballad from the broadway repertoire. I am a high soprano with a belt. The problem is a lot of the songs I do are from popular shows, some of which are still on broadway and I know "some" schools don't like that. Could someone tell me of any songs that could be good. Thanks you so much!

it's not "some" schools...it's all schools.

but anyway, in terms of showing off your high soprano side, look at older musicals. most of them are more suited for legit sopranos than today's more pop-ish stuff.

i am in the same situation as you, i am also auditioning for schools (though i am RE-auditioning) and i have the same type of voice, so i hope that that helps you a little.

Are Guys And Dolls, and My Fair Lady included in those songs not to do?

re: Help with songs for colllege!!!

Don't freak out over my grammar or wrong use of words because unlike some people I didn't check this over. I would advise you not to read this if thats going to bother you because it's almost 12am and I'm exhausted. hahah. And parts of this probabaly are going to be hard to comprehend...so anywayy...

sporti- I really don't think that's totally true. I am possibly singing a song that is in a current broadway show for my auditions (its a soprano piece, but I'm afraid to name it because more people may sing it...haha). I had a voice lesson with a voice professor at the hartt school (because he lives close by) and he said that he thought the song was a great choice because it sits in my voice well. He said as long as I sang it well it didn't matter if it was currently on broadway.

I think it really depends on what song you are doing. I mean I wouldn't go into an audition and sing "defying gravity" or "popular" because I would consider that pushing it. But if you find a song from a current broadway show, that may not be as popular, but is perfect for your voice, I say go for it!

I think the most important things about choosing an audition piece are, finding a song you love and are comfortable with and one that shows off your voice. So what if the song is considered "overdone" if you kick butt doing it and then sing it! Do you realize that the people at these auditions have heard 100s of songs over and over again? No matter what you sing they probably have heard it many times. What matters most is how you do it.

And I do have boundaries on "overdone" songs that I will or will not sing. But honestly any professional that I've asked has told me the same thing.

Thanks. I want to sing "Think of me" from Phantom, and truthfully that song really fits me. I have been doing it for 6 years, and my coach, who is on staff at Juilliard says I do that song perfectly and that it is just great for me. I think if you do something well, you should do.

i don't know about "Think of Me".
i love that song, and i'm sure you can sing it very well, but some auditors (sadly re: Help with songs for colllege!!!)don't prefer Andrew Lloyd Webber. Also, because the show is now a movie, that song will be over done...even if it's not at auditions, i mean in general at recitals and concerts...etc.
unless you can sing it better than any christine that has ever been on broadway, i don't recommend it.
do something else that will tell them that you have a wider range of musical theatre knowledge. if you can sing "Think of Me" well, then i am positive there are plenty of songs in older musicals with legit soprano songs that you would be great at. they'd probably show off your voice even better than "Think of Me" which is very repetitive.
best of luck! re: Help with songs for colllege!!!

born2c - i know and have worked with your coach (we've discussed this before), and i know how knowledgable she is. in this case, however, i would most definitely NOT use "think of me" for a few reasons.

--it's one of the more popular songs from an incredibly popular show, they've heard it a million times.
--with the recent release of the movie, i'm sure POTO songs will be all over college auditions.

try to find another song that fits as well as "think of me" does; there has to be at least one.

cathyhyatt -- i definitely understand what you mean. if your song isn't one of the most popular, then it's probably going to be okay. i was referring more to songs like "think of me" and "defying gravity", or others like that. auditions are absolutely more about showing your voice than your song choice, but the less often they've heard it, the more chance you have of being the best they've heard :). good luck...i know how stressful this stuff is, because i'm doing it all for the second time now!!

I know for some programs they specifically tell you not to sing any Gilbert & Sullivan, ALW, etc. Where are all you applying to?

"Cry Like the Wind" from Do Re Mi. ALOT can be done with this piece, and it shows good range.
