I can't claim ANY objectivity, Glebb, when the Great Kate is involved.
DGrant, I would agree with you on EVERY other film but this one. I gotta go with Ryder. I grew up loving the Hepburn version, but when the newer one came out, I just fell in love with it and Ryder's Jo. Actually the whole film was just absolutely flawless.

Matt - I agree. As I said, I have NO objectivity. An idol is an idol, and the work becomes secondary.
Ryder. Hepburn was always a rather...unnatural, for lack of a better word...actress in my opinion.
Interesting observation, Rath. Hepburn "unnatural"... I've never thought of it that way, but she WAS unnatural in that I always felt that she was "different" and somehow almost "distinct" from the role. That's probably the opposite of what an actor should be, but those are exactly the things that make me enjoy her performances! She certainly brought her own distinctive perspective to every role but I bought it every time! She was probably my favorite all-time actor. I did like Ryder's performance but that doesn't detract at all, in my mind, from Kate's.

Kate is numero uno in this one. She "got" who Jo is...totally.
---but Winona is a close second. Really did love that version and thought Susan Sarandon was a perfect Marmee. A good strong woman.
Never ever cared for June's portrayal of Jo. I just want to slap her. In fact I dislike so much of the casting in that version.
