perhaps a stupid question........
but aren't hotspots free? I mean if I'm in an apirport, hotel, etc that is a hotspot, can't I connect to it free on my laptop?

The Grover's, that is of course your right to do so. But any institution with a hotspot will hardly share their property without charging a fee
