re: How Are The Mumps Marvel-Ann?

You, my scathingly brilliant chum, have made my night.

"Willows, willows..."
"I am a captive in a nunnery"
"Well I'm not giving you Burt Lancaster!"
"Quiet please, or we'll crack."
"It's the first race at Pimleco..."
"I hope I die young, and very wealthy."
"Nobody said they'd take my Social Security."

Other notable actresses that palyed nunss who you forgot:

Mary Tyler Moore in Change of Habit with Elvis Presley
Celeste Holms and Loretta Young in Come Back to the Stable
Ingrid Bergman in The Bells of St Mary
Audrey Hepburn in The Nun's Story (a wonderful movie)
Shirley MacLaine played a woman pretending to be a nun in Two Mules for Sister Sarah
Deborah Kerr in Heaven Knows Mr Allison
Lilia Skala in Lillies Of the Field (Another great movie starring Sidney Poitier)

I had a nun fixation as a kid and loved watching these movies....it's a Catholic school thing

"Dig that crazy accordion!"

"Mary get rid of the bird's nest.....No not that one. THAT one."

I too love this movie. I actually have it because I stole it from my parents.

I love the scene where Sister LaGorie is talking to Mary when she is doing penance for her sins and then when she leaves she says "Goodnight Rachel." I think the movie does a good job of showing nuns as human beings. Has anyone seen the sequel? I personally didn't like it.

Love your new icon AndyHardy, and all of your quotes.
Those are good ones.

Meg Tilly and Anne Bancroft also played Nuns.

re: How Are The Mumps Marvel-Ann?

I love this film. Partly because it's just so good, and partly because it was filmed right by my grandmother's house.

Mother: The band will perform in their gym suits.
Rachel: Our gym suits?
Mother: Yes.
Mary: But, they're awful! I mean, it's not as if they were like Sacred Heart's. At Sacred Heart they wear short-shorts for gym.
Mother: They're French.

I LOVED this movie! My only disappointment was when I got sent off to boarding school and found out that our nuns were nothing like Roz Russell! And they didn't sing either..........bummer!

Couldn't find the DVD for rent, so I bought it. Great! I loved the film. Very episodic, but comes to a very fulfilling conclusion. The cast is excellent. Wonderful orchestral score that adds to the mood of the film. I love discovering new (older) films.

re: How Are The Mumps Marvel-Ann?

Did anyone mention a certain flying nun?
Also, Cherry Jones is currently lighting up Broadway playing a nun.
And let's not forget Ellen DeGeneres' bizarrely funny turn as a nun on Will and Grace.

Bumpety bump bump....how in hell did I miss this thread before??? I'm in Seventh Heaven cuz this film was shown on TV this afternoon (well it is a school holiday and it's always on during school holidays). This is one of my most favourite films....the best scenes are imortalising Marvel-Ann...Ros Russell taking off the plaster cast and the glorious Mary Wickes jumping into the swimming pool...this film gave me and my mate in senior school a whole new language...when we discovered we weren't good at something (usually on the sports field) we would say "Better stick with the silent piano"...and "Dig that crazy acordian"......and always loved the scene on the bus when the passenger says to Hayley Mills that she's too young to smoke "I'm not young...I'm a midget with bad habits".....Ros Russell was fantastic in this - "It is a cruel and criminal act to let you two loose on an unsuspecting world"....and I always loved June Harding - stole every scene...and I thought it was kind of sexy having Gypsy Rose Lee as Phipps - her photo being on the cover of 'Dance Review'...love the ballet sequence 'Graceful as young willows'....thank you so much Glebb for bringing this movie onto the Board....and Andy Hardy - I should have known you'd be party to the evil doings at St Francisville!

Praise to the movie that put "scathingly brilliant" into my vocabulary!

Producer William Frye personally offered his friend Greta Garbo $1 million to play the Mother Superior in the film. When she declined, he offered the role to Rosalind Russell at a much lower salary.
